It is impossible with the electronic transmission in a M/B. Once you get over 10 mph or so, look at the gear selector screen. A small triangle will appear and point to what gear positions are available at that speed.
I have actually experimented with loaners....N is as dangerous as it gets. You can drop it back into D at highway speeds and the trans will ease back into gear and transition smoothly. |

Unlike Toyota, your Mercedes has drive-by-wire throttle electronics that permit the brake pedal to override the accelerator pedal. Hit the brake, and throttle shuts off.

Kent,
That is good news. As I read the news articles, I have come to realize that all vehicles that rely on electronic throttle controls may be subject to the design flaw that is affecting Toyota vehicles. It is a relief to see that MB has incorporated a failsafe in the system design. JR

http://www.automotiveaddicts.com/947...by-wires-fault My 04 TL Acura and 07 Acura RL are also drive-by-wire. Update: The giant Japanese automaker (TOYOTA) has said all new models sold in the United States will have the override system by 2011 and that many recalled vehicles will be refitted with it. The system automatically deactivates the accelerator when the brake pedal is pressed, allowing the driver to stop safely even if the car's throttle is stuck open.

The question is NOT about whether it's drive-by-wire, the question is whether there is brake pedal override. The Mercedes has it.

You're right. Safety is all that matters. However, since you mentioned drive-by-wire as the reason why Mercedes permits the brake pedal to override the accelerator pedal is not valid in this case. Like you said, the question is not whether it's drive-by-wire or not so there wasn't any merit for it to be mentioned in the first place.

Not that I have a 2wd R or would attempt it but for hypothetical conversation. Would the electronic brake override make attempting a smoking burnout impossible if you had a 2WD R-Class?

In theory, the "brake Torque" burnout would be impossible.
You could always wait until you get a loaner and give it go....
