Transmission Problems (B2 Piston) - Please Help!

I stumbled across this forum and hopefully someone here will be kind enough to help me out.

Here's the story:

I purchased a 1983 300sd Turbo diesel from someone i worked for. It has 130K on the clock. I paid $1,500 for the car, because he said it needed a new transmission. After calling around to many shops i realized how expensive a transmission swap was going to be. I then began doing research and found out about the infamous B2 piston. The car would go in reverse so i figured I'd check to make sure, so this weekend I jacked up the car, did some cleaning and popped the b2 cover. As soon as I removed the cover a whole lot of pieces fell out into my hand, which left me with no doubt the B2 piston was at fault.

Now for the problem;

Because all the pieces fell out like that I’m not to sure how they go back in. I've ordered the pieces I need for the repair as per this page:

*http://transmission.articles.mbz.org/b2/*

And hopefully when they get here I can figure it out. I just wonder if anyone who has completed this repair might have some advice or directions. I can post pictures and more details if needed. I'm not even sure which direction the new B2 piston slides into the cylinder, or what the piece is that looks like a short metal rod with rounded ball shaped ends is.. It all came out so fast. Anyone have a diagram or something?

Sorry to make this so long, but I'm itching to get this car on the road.

Thanks in advance

Sam

Sam,

I have just joined this forum and I believe that I am experiencing the same problem with my 1991 300se. I see that you had this experience in 3004. I hope that you are still a member of this forum. Given the frequency of this problem, I am dumbfounded that no one replied. If you are willing to share your experience, I would be grateful. Thanks in advance.

Thanks User,

I had found that site and printed out the pictures. I also found another site that describes the process:

www.mbz.org/articles/transmission/b2/repair

This site does not show the need to pull the exhaust pipe section. I have the b2 piston on order. I was able to buy it on ebay for $76.50 plus shipping. This price is about $50 cheaper than the best price on the net and about half of the dealer price. While I had been attempting to sell this car as is for about $1100. I will get it repaired and raise the price. Again, thanks for your help.
