OK - I'll start it off:

120,000 just passed... surely there is SOMEONE with a high-milage W140!? I just browsed the Lexas LS400 group, and they are bemoaning *only* 240,000 miles on some cars!

Rob - I'm right about at 150K. The car is as strong as ever. I have been told by my Ind.Machanic, he has seem many with over 350K. Up keep is the secret according to him. After 3+ years this has been an awesome car.

Rod, did this mechanic mention if the cars with 350K miles were with the V8 or the 6 cylinder (M104) ?

Well we were talking about my car ( an S320 ) so I'm guessing he ment the 6. One of his comments was that the 320 was probably the most reliable & to stay away from the V12 unless I wanted to help finance his business.

According to what I have read, the M120 V12 is very reliable, and people have put in excess of 300,000 miles on it with regular maintainence. The highest I have heard of an W140 with the I6 motor had to be around 500,000 miles.

HLG600 - Not dissing your ride just passing on what I was told. Fact is I would love to have a V12 some day. If I had the ability I'd have a collection -SLK, M, S, Convertable etc. - for now its the S class and working on an SLK320

Drive on

I didn't take your post as an offense sir; I, as yourself, just wanted to share what I have read about the motor, albeit a different view. My family owned several W140 S320's over the years - excellent automobiles, IMO.

My current mechanic is an ex AMG builder/mechanic. He's straight from Germany and has years of experience with Mercedes. Maybe its just his German accent, but I value his opinions in our discussions. Anyway, he mentioned to me one day that (in his opinion) there are two engines made by Mercedes that are balanced almost perfectly. They are:
M120
OM606

The M120 is the 6.0L V12 but which one is the OM606?

The OM606 is the inline 6 cylinder, 3.0 liter, diesel engine. It came in the W210 model as a non turbo from 95'-97'. A turbo was added to the OM606 for the W210 models in 98'-99'. I also think this engine is used for the Mercedes and Dodge small panel trucks.

the m104 for is also an excellent engine that will last forever, if taken care of, and the v12 is nothing more than two of them....

My co-worker was the 3rd person to gawk at me buying a 94 s320 for 10,000 dollars with 94K miles on it. He added "That is rediculous mileage for a mercedes, especially an S-Class!" I guess our cars are not worth much to most people once their warranties are up. Yet I'm going on 110K miles and havn't had an engine problem yet! I can't imagine what they would value my car with over 250K on it. It seems people would be willing to spend more money for a go-kart!

I took my W140 out today and it turned 70,000. I think I should sell it but can't bear to, it is such a fine car.

My S600 1995 has 264000 miles and is used everyday.

Reliable and comfortable.

Every Spring I spend about £100 just to stay on top of any chips and marks on the paint.

Engine and mechanics have been low maintenance.

suspension needed new accumulators and also new front springs (spring broke!)

A/c had overhaul at 200k miles

I'm hoping to get to 500k miles by which time I will be able to afford a used Maybach!
