Just ordered it to put in my 740, if all goes well it is going in the S500 as well. Interested in the results if someone is about to do this on a W220 car. Awesome unit, blows the factory stuff out of the water. Bluetooth, Ipod, decent GPS, backup cam...

my cousin is a beast when it comes to hooking up car audio...hes in paterson nj if anybody needs anything installed 20 mins from nyc....he made the custom fitment for the dash, and hes going to make my custom dash with Matching wood grain....so its going to look completely stock! im taking the pioneer logo off the radio of course....and its got 10 gb built in for music storage. they sell an adapter for my car to make the steering wheel controls work.

Thats awesome.
I installed a AVIC-D3 on my ML55 and it is way better than the OEM unit.
Can you list the part you used to connect to the steering wheel? Please update us how it works out. Will you retain most of the dash displays?
Im getting sick of the primitive Nav on my S. I always thought there were some system and command function that is built in to the head unit and the car will not function correctly without it. I guess it is good new that the HU and be changed.

IMO I would go with the matching wood grain. I think the rest would not look correct in the car. Post some pics when you get it done Im sure a ton of us want to see the outcome at least I would.

2003 S600 ; 1999 E55 (sold)
I would be interested in your research on the steering wheel controls...I looked into this quite a bit for my 600...had Sunil research it as well...he said it was a no go with the steering wheel controls.
I actually found a part number but it had to be ordered overseas (HK maybe) and he indicated he had tried it and it would not work.
I ended up going with the TV out -> blank button option on the existing comand unit...I was not as interested in the nav as the HDD option...now I am having the 300gb HD/DVD in motion to screen/SD flash mem unit installed so will be able to play songs similarly etc.
Just not the nice nav though thats for sure!!!
Perhaps the 2003 would not work, but other years would.
Let me know..Aaron

Interested in seeing the outcome of this project. I've always wondered if there was any way to hook up an aftermarket double din navigation system and have it integrate with the steering wheel controls functionality.
The '02 navigation system seems so old school to me. I want to upgrade also.
Good luck on this and be sure to post pics!

Here's the double din dash piece on ebay. I know the S came without nav in other countries.
