-30 weight oils are not allowed in AMG models, which would indicate that they may not offer as much protection.

I always use MOBILE1 10W 30 on both of my cars . told by the dealer an all season motor oil since in RI temps average from 100 in the summer all the way down to negative degree in the winter .

I'd say its less about protection, and more about clearances in AMG motors.

This topic has been discussed at length at the AMG Private Lounge site.

End result is this:

Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach recommends:

AMG 55 engines should use Mobil 1 0W-40 M-B Spec 229.5

AMG 63 engines should use Movil 1 5W-40 M-B Spec 229.51

This is wrong, please read this thread: http://www.mbworld.org/forums/3203930-post21.html

This link was post # 2 in this thread.

229.x1 oils are for DPF/Bluetec models only.

There is no reason to use Mobil, it is only one of the possible choices.

All AMG engines except the 63 are modified MB engines. I think the high temp shear stregnth is perhaps the most important factor with the -40/50 weight oils.
