for pollution reasons it is now 5w-40.

If you have 0w-40 its fine to still use it but all new cars and dealership services have gone to 5w-40.

I do not believe this is correct, the 5w-40 is 229.51 rated for the Bluetec models. 0w-40 is 229.5, which is the best choice for a gasoline car.

You got them switched.....

It used to be 5W-40, but now Mercedes has moved to 0W-40 due to more strict rules to reduce ZDDP in motor oil in order to protect the catalytic converter.

Not unless you want to void your warrantee. If you do not have one, use anything you want. 10W-30 Mobil1 would probably be ok. I would stick to the 0W-40.

10W-30 wouldn't void the warranty, in fact if you look in your MB manual, depending on temps there is wide range of acceptable viscocities recommended. I do agree 0-40 is probably the most widely used. He/she doesn't say where he is so hard to tell if he needs a higher winter viscocity or not.

Use Mobil 1 or others MB recommends.
