Unhappy Rear Window Regulator

Help please! my rear right window stopped working(96 E320). It does not move up nor down. I can move manually by pushing / pulling it. Everyone tells me that the window regulator needs to be replaced. Has anyone fix this problem? can a DIY'er fix this? are there any special tools required? thank you for your help.

Have not experienced this in my 01, however I have heard of the problem and its being caused by the plastic pulleys that the cable runs in failing. A known problem but not all experience it. Dealer is the best bet for repair

thank you both for your replies

I heard of the problem too from other's online messages. I also called the service department, they immediately told me it was the window regulator (i called two different locations) . Well, i want to see if i can fix it myself just in case this happens again. i dont want to pay $300 every time one of the four windows break. I did checked with www.mercedesshop.com. they do have lots of materials regarding regarding this problem. thanks you very much.

an import
Just had mine replaced at the stealership. Had to wait 2 weeks as they had to order the part from Germany and then shipped it by donkey over here.

Luckily I have extended warranty and this part is covered. Otherwise it would have been about a $375 bill to fix (roughly 2 hour book time according to MB). I didn't have a choice as I couldn't raise or lower the window when it broke and the window was down at the time.

Good luck.

MB96:

From what I understand this problem occurrs only with the rear windows not the front. SDo, you only have to worry about two windows, not four.

Finally i got the door panel off.

Well, I will be working on it from the instructions at mercedesshop.com. I will report back when and if i get the window fix. wish me luck. the regulator is only $160 and the four rivets that i need is only $ 0.38 each. what a saving if i can do this myself. but I still need to buy a rivet gun though.
