1985 190E 2.3 Turbo Road Test
From a 1985 Road & Track magazine review
Reeves Calloway turbo/intercooler kit $5295
"Callaway's solution uses a small IHI turbocharger and boost restricted to just 7.0 psi, giving excellent throttle response while filling in the big hole in the torque curve splendidly. The system includes a tidy intercooler nestled behind the right corner of the car's airdam that cools the pressurized air enough to retain the stock compression ratio and avoid water injection. This is the sort of turbo application we prefer. Big turbos blasting out pressure in a sudden rush usually defeat themselves in most real-world driving situations. With the Calloway setup, the sensation is that of a modest power adjunct, a helping hand, so to speak."
Calloway mounted the boost gauge in the stock steering wheel, replacing the 3-point star insert.
Performance (5-Speed)
******Turbo Stock
1/4 Mi 16.6 (84 mph) 17.5 (79.5 mph)
0-30 2.6 3.1
0-60 9.2 9.9
0-80 14.5 17.7
HP 190 120
Since this report was done in '85, there have been advances in turbo technology, including "twin turbos" which probably means more useable HP, but it is nice to know that, way back when, the 190E was a good platform for some FAI.
