Get someone who works at a MB Dealer to get you a side job, and its possible to go faster just the governor won't let you unless you have certified MB dealer Tech Computers.

Biggest bang-for-the-buck is an overdrive pulley and ecu tune. Cost would be a few $ thousand.
There is quite a bit of information on performance mods in the E55 AMG forum, http://www.mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg-81/, and some in the R230 AMG forum, http://www.mbworld.org/forums/r230-amg-49/.
