Help with CEL on 04 Sl55. Engine hesitation/Vibration

I am new to this 2004 Sl55 with 78,000mi on it. I began to notice a vibration/misfire at around 2000rpm while driving and slight misfire at idle. Its a sort of hesitation at cruise, but at WOT i don't really feel it, and power comes on strong.
I thought it was possibly the spark plugs, so i replaced all 16 with OEM NGK laser plugs. I also replaced the air filters while i was in there..
Afterwards the problem still exists. I notice the vibration with the engine in Park/Neutral as well as drive @ 2000RPM. I then thought it might be the motor mounts, as they seem to be a common problem with these cars.
Yesterday I got a CEL to come on. I decided to run the car by Advance auto and AutoZone to have it scanned, and their Actron scanners couldn't connect.
I'm thinking the problem is either a coil pack, maf, or engine mounts.
Aside from going to the local dealer, how can i determine what the light is for?
Also, why won't the Actron scanners connect?
Any ideas what my problem could be?
Thanks

Unfortunately it could be anything, including things unrelated to the vibration.

My Actron CP9175 works fine on my SL55, for what it's worth.

If you can track down someone with a Star Diagnostics system that will certainly read the codes for you.

Good luck!

Well, the harsh vibration and or booming sound in park/neutral @ around 2000 rpm, is in most cases (99.3% of the time) attributed to the rear engine mount (transmission mount), at our mileage, its probably original and should be replaced, afterwards you will notice the concern gone.....

The misfire is another story....

The fault codes, well you will need a star or xentry mercedes benz platform scanner/laptop to get the most accurate information on the cel...

I would venture out a guess and say its the MAF sensor. Just as the other's have stated, hook it up to Star and it will definitely tell you. Good luck!

Thanks guys..
I have a buddy that has a different obd2 scanner so i will try it tomorrow.
I would really like to have my own, so i really didn't want to give the dealer 100+ to scan the car, and would rather use the money to purchase a compatible scanner for myself.
Maybe a ScanGuage2 is in my near future..
If his scanner doesn't work, I will most likely take it to the dealer so i can begin to get this problem sorted.

Also, i don't think i am going to drive the car much until i figure out if it is some sort of misfire. I would hate for 1 cylinder to not be firing, and have piston wash as the result >lead to ring failure, gas in the oil, and eventually bearing failure as well.
Maybe someone can answer this for me> Why do we have 2 spark plugs per cylinder? Is it for emission purposes, and both plugs fire at the same time for complete fuel burn? OR Is it for performance purposes, and 1 plug fires until you begin to build boost/accelerate hard and then the second plug comes online to prevent plug blowout??

Also, I was thinking of changing all the engine mounts and trans mount anyway. I have heard it is difficult, but not impossible. I have pulled and reinstalled engines countless times on different vehicles, so I guess i will see what i am getting myself into as i go.. I have heard the engine just has to be lifted a couple of inches in order to remove the mounts.
Any tips or tricks i should be aware of??
Nick

you might have a P0106 code, that is what I got on mine too. Same engines.

If it's not keep us updated!

hmm

Well, I just got back into town... I started up the car to head over to my buddies house with the scanner, and the check engine light never came on???

I am really thinking i have some sort of misfire problem. How can i test the coil packs. On previous cars, i would just pull the plug, ground it, and look for spark. But i have not worked on this advanced type of vehicle yet..
Any ideas how to check the coil packs for proper operation?

Nick

spark plugs fire alternately, not at same time. prob helps them last longer. Any scan tool should read the codes. I had misfires on both banks and had to replace both coil packs. You are lucky, you can replace individual ones.
