Top Problems
I have an 99 SLK with two top problems and of course both are intermittent:
The first issue is when putting the top down the trunk opens, the windows go down but the top will not move and retrack into the trunk (It looks like the latch is releasing). The second problem the top will not come out of trunk after the trunk opens. I know it is a switch(s) issue but I am looking ideas for which ones to start with. (Yes the pump is operating). Thanks, Rick |

Is the power roof switch flashing to indicate a failure when you experience these intermittment problems?
If it is not flashing then I would probably rule out safety or interlock switchs. Have you visually inspected the mechanism and roof latches? I have read old posts about latch problems on earlier SLKs where the latch metal appeared to be too soft and started deforming or the metal burring. Another thought might still be the hydraulic system. I think the pump could be running but the system still have a problem. Perhaps a weak pump that isn't producing enough hydraulic pressure to initially release and start the process or enough gusto to raise the top back out of the trunk. This theory might hold more water if manually assisting the roof to start or come up out of the trunk helps. A hydraulic leak in the system would also lead to diminished lifting power. Any leaked oil in the trunk area? Just some thoughts, I hope they help your diagnosis. |
