Replace Low Beam lamp (Big Oval thing)

So I've been scouring the net for answers, but I just get more confused as to what I need. One of my lamps went out the left big oval light and I can't seem to find which lamp to use?

This is on a 99 E55.

It's supposed to be xenon. The confusion starts on:

- friend suggested to replace the whole assembly
- replace the bulb, but what kind?
- H7? But read on some thread this is only used for High beam?

I'm just not figuring this out. Can someone help before I go

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

If your have xenon headlight, the light bulb is D2R.
If you would like to get the whole headlight replaced, I have one set of Euro spec headlight:

On our W210, we don't have bi-xenon, only low beam is xenon, which need D2R bulb. The light beam is halogen H7 bulb.

But who all sells D2R's? I have one that's whitish/blue and one that has a more orangeish/red tint to it (very faint but enough to tell the difference). I'm looking to have them both the whitish/blue.

Sorry, I was more referring to brands rather than dealers. Brands like Hella or Sylvania or such.

Both Philips and Osram make D2R bulbs. I don't know which one is better than the other.

www.napaonline.com show D2R bulb under there 'PartsPRO SE' section. It is $85.99 - Part: LMP D2R or Item#: LMPD2R. It comes up under Halogen bulb section but it does state 'Bulb Type:HID'. You can also order it at NAPA stores.

I've had my driver's side low beam bulb go and need to replace it. I see I need a D2R, but following that link to Napa's website, I'm presented with 4 D2R options. One is hi/lo and not the right one, but of the remaining 3, two are halogen and one is xenon. I'm assuming I want the xenon for my E55 to replace the stock bulb? The price difference is large, with the Xenon more than twice the price of the halogen, but also in line with what my local auto parts store told me.

Check out http://ddmtuning.com/ . They mostly sell items for BMWs, but they have many great HID products. Go to the HID kit section and select bulbs: ( http://www.ddmtuning.com/index.php?p...=264&parent=85 ) They are $25/pair. You can choose your color temp. and bulb application, in your case D2R.

- I have no affiliation with ddmtuning, I've just bought products from them before.

that current NAPA price for a D2R is way too high. Thats price is higher than MBZ dealer costs at $216.79. Whoa!

Is that for real? how can they sell a pair of D2R bulbs for $25 when everywhere else they are $200+ each?!?

yes it is for real. Even someone i know that used to order HID kits from a Chinese distributor to sell here was saying that he couldn't beat these prices. I currently use a set of their $39.99 HID kit on my car and I have no complaints.

Just placed an order for 2 pairs of 6000k. Amazing price that I can't find anywhere else. I'm fearing the mandatory $30 UPS (hoccct pwwt!) brokerage fee, but even with that they're still the best price. I hope they're of equal quality to the OEM Osram, or at least close.

Well I finally installed the new bulbs. The new colour at 6000k is much whiter/bluer than OEM.

The first photo has only the driver's side bulb (D2R at 6000k) changed, with the passenger side presumably being the OEM 4600k (?) bulb. The second photo shows both low beam lamps replaced with the new bulbs. These are the inexpensive bulbs mentioned earlier in this thread. I really like the new appearance.

Tim

^---- What he said...

Now that I've had the new bulbs in, I can comment on them.

The colour takes a little getting used to at night if you've always driven with standard halogens. I've also had a couple cars flash their highbeams at me, thinking mine are on.

A functional issue: Almost everytime I first turn them on if the car is "cold", the driver's side light doesn't "strike" and I have to cycle the headlight power knob to get it going. At best it comes right on, at worst I had to cycle it about 10 times before it did. Once, and only once, did this happen with the passenger side lowbeam.

Aside from that one incident, I think I can attribute this to the bulb socket on the driver's side. I drove the car for a few weeks without a bulb installed and this appears to have cause some arcing in the socket. There is a very slight burn mark in line between the electrodes. But it still works for the most part.

Has anyone else had an issue like the crop up?
