AMG63 R&D #1 (Free 18 RWHP)

Well Ladies and Gentlemen, the time has come to unlock the secrets of this new, wondefull engine.

To establish the baseline, I used trezai's CLS63.

At 1000 miles he dynoed his car at another shop and, if I am not mistaken, ended up with 414RWHP on Dynojet 248.

After 3500 miles the car put down 424RWHP which is exactly what I was expecting it to do. Unfortunately, due to the lack of time, we could not find a way to pick-up rpms, so there are no TQ readings - only wheel HP.

While the car was cooling down, I took the airboxes off to examine them. The box size is a bit on a small side. Bigger design would be worth some power. More importantly I found an easy 18RWHP in them.

When you take them apart, besides stock air filter, there is another kind of filter - Charcoal (Please see first picture) - it's function is to keep vapor emissions from escaping through intake manifold and air boxes.

On E60 M5, which has the same filters, removing them was worth 12-17RWHP. So, out they go. Using a flat screw driver simply push the edge of the filter out from behind the tab and 10 seconds later it is out.

On the dyno, car went from 424 to 442RWHP an 18 HP gain, with a nice bump accross the whole curve.

So get your tools and get at it -

Thank you for listening.

I wonder how many 63's are sitting in office parking lots right now with their hoods popped...

Is it fair to say a K&N should add another 3-4HP on top of that also ?

yep, this is a no brainer as I see it.
I didn't see a lot of difference until I did a throttle reset but now it seems like it's got a real healthy amount of oomph.

Thanks again to Vadim and the guys at evosport.

Where is the airbox located anyway?

And if I have to take off the valve cover, how?

Is there one even available for the 63? I'd be willing to try it. Even though 3-4 HP would get lost in the 440 it'd be nice to know there is nothing clogging the nostrils of the beast.

Put me down for two.
I know Brabus was able to get some excellent gains out of a CAT upgrade. Any thoughts of doing a similar mod to that?

Okay so I just got back from a meeting with this a-hole. I was kinda pissed so figured I'd give it a go for 0-60.
I use the g-timer in my car. Not sure how accurate it is but that is what I use.
Before this mod the best I had ever done was 4.19 (seen in the video I posted).

So with the newly foud 18 rwhp I tried again today.

ESP ON
Transmission mode = M
Shifted all the way down to 1
No power brake

Ready for this? 4.07 s
That is a .12 second improvment on my first try over the many trys it took to do 4.19 . Needless to say I am pretty happy and also sure that I can get in the high 3s if I really really get lucky with traction.

Probably not, you could lose 3-4 hp. Stick with paper and don't buy into the K@N BS hype.

that's great! but you do realize 18rwhp = about 20 crank & every 100lbs knocks off a tenth .10 your 0-60 gains seem a bit unrealistic , but G-timers aren't perect, we need to meet up bro! gotta run

Meet this weekend? Saturday LA? Jangy, & Vic might be there 2
