S600 broken rear pic

Here is a single pic of my broken rear. You can see the sheared pinion still attached to the driveshaft(propeller shaft as the germans like to call it). Nice clean break. I have a couple leads for a used rear....don't know what to do at this point. To remove this ad, register today or login if you already are registered!

Pinion shaft Failure

Thats is a nice clean impact Shear. My guess is that it is not do to the metalurgy of the pinion gearshaft its self, but something broke inside, AE Cross pin or a spider gear. Those broke parts wedge themselves , between the pinion & Ring gear teeth. Now is the Time for that Quaife TBD. I saw your land yacht run at MIR . It was very impressive Take care ___PTE___

Hey Stephen:

As Jrocket said, simple fix, a new ring and pinion. Oh yeah, GREAT time for a LSD install as you have to disamble the entire rear end anyway, ie NO ADDITIONAL LABOR CHARGE.

See yeah

PS: Thats what happens when you put down almost 700 pound feet of torque my friend, ESPICALLY with sticky tires like drag radials

Im going to agree with PTE here. You said it felt funny in the burn out box.I bet you broke a spider gear and it got locked up after that, shearing the pinion shaft off when you tried to launch.Still and easy fix though.

curious...do you have any wheel hop problems...every time i hit 30mph i blow the tires into 2nd gear and the car wheel hops pretty bad...didn't know if you had the same problem on the street and if you did, it probably contributed to the failure??

No wheel hop at all. The car has never been violent when launching. Actually it is probably the smoothest 60' of any car that I have had in the low1.6 60' bracket. My '89 turbo TA I had felt as if it was going to break something every time I launched the thing.

Oh, on the street I usually have drag radials on the car and it never does anything resembling wheel hop. I really don't think I have ever had the stock tires on it for any WOT runs as they are completely useless.

To me it simply looks like a clean break due to the TQ exceeding the capacity of the axle.

The solution is to either increase the diameter or metallurgy of the material axle is made from.

I am looking into it................................

The axles are fine...it is the pinion that completely sheared off flush to the rear pumpkin. I started removing it yesterday but only tinkered for an hour or so. I need to purchase a set of torx sockets. I have the torx bits but the germans have to do it differently. It appears that I can unbolt the axles and then drop the center section straight down and out of the car. Of course I am in the process of removing the rear section of exhaust that has a few rusty bolts that break instantly. I'll keep you guys updated on the progress.

You are correct. Why not pull the nitrous setup and tow that ***** to the dealer? You never know, they may warranty it...

you must be a turbo freak like me! i use to have a '84GN, '87GN and....a '89TTA...#90...it was a festival car at indy. it ran a 13.13@101 bone stock on gatorbacks...with a chip, test pipe and 9"K&N ran a 12.67@113. My TTA never had a wheel hop problem but my '87GN did.

turbo cars are the best for launches...the power is gradual and doesn't shock the drivetrain. gonna try some different tires and see if it helps.

good luck getting your car fixed!!

john

wife was not mad and I haven't finished removing everything at this point. With Thanksgiving and screaming kids I haven't had much free time for car tinkering.
