Food for thought - Intake tubing

I was at home depot yesterday and this tubing caught my eye. It is made out of aluminum and is flexible. would it be wise to fabricate some intake similar to the fangs using this tubing?

If anything I would try to use it as brake ducts?

I would avoid using aluminum do to heat. That thing would probably get totally heat soaked causing a hot air intake. Just my thoughts. Ask thericker, I think he already tried something similar.

I could be wrong, but something like that would create a lot of turbulence in the intake.

This would be my thinking as well.

Some time ago a intake thread popped up and some members brought up the idea of using Samco silicone hoses to fab up some new intake tubing. The hoses are relatively smooth inside and they have some that have good heat resistance too.

Heat absorption and a non-smooth interior would be two very good reasons not to use this. But I like your thinking. The E39 M5's have something similar to route air from from the lower front bumper up to the engine bay for cooler air. Not sure if we have room to do anything similar in our cars.

Have to agree with everyone else here. You don't want to use that. All those nice little aluminum fins are going to capture heat on the hotside and it's going to migrate to the cool air running through the inside. Will work just like a heat exchanger.

Remember ... heat always runs from high temp area to cool. The exterior will undoubtedly be the high temp area.

Maybe another way to go is wrapping the current tubing with heat sheilds or some type of insulation.....

Like gold? Apparently the McLaren F1 usues gold because it reflects heat very well!

Cool link! great prices, 1 could custom fab-up a trick CAI, maybe help reduce a little Intake Heat IE CF laid inside & out, or just add some pizzazz to OEM setup, chk out these Carbon Fiber wrapped alloy 3" Couplers

Don't give up so easily.
I doubt that dryer venting is going to collapse.
Due to what?
Internal (suction) pressure? Bull.

If heat soak is a problem, wrap it with heat reflective tape.

The turbulence would be more of a concern than collapse.
However, the expanded intake volume should more than compensate for the turbulence.

(Yes, it's true, I cannot provide any science to support my position, but neither did anyone else and I supported my comments with pure conjecture.
)

That stuff isn't going to collapse on the "lower" pressure side of the intake (Pre-filter) Between the filter and intake could be another story as the filter clogs up.

I wouldn't use it though because it will be a much more efficient heat sink.

I tested a very simple theory yesterday and it worked fantastic. Internal tube temps dropped about 25degrees.

Intake tube system the same CLS55 vs E55 ? Simple mod ... great results!
