Smile Played with a Pontiac G8 GXP

So last night this car flys by me on the right and cuts me off at the light. Unfortunately, there is a motorcycle in the right lane so I am stuck behind this guy about half a car length in the left lane. He was driving a Pontiac G8 GXP. When the light turned green he floored it and I swung into the right lane and then got on it as well. I couldn't get on it right away so he was probably about 2 or 3 car lengths ahead of me before I could nail it.

I reeled him in slowly but was still about at his rear bumper at 80 so I decided to quit since we were in cop invested waters. I would have beaten him handily from the dig but I wonder if I should have done better?

they're quick cars and you performed as expected. if you give someone the jump on the street, a 13second car can easily "beat" your 12second amg.

nice run!

G8 GXPs are no jokes, especially top end and if modded. The LS3 motor rules! (same motor in some C6 vettes and in new SS camaro). They're heavy weight kills them.

and +1 to what mikey said. A jump makes a HUGE difference.

running somebody from 0-80 and already behind by a few car lengths is not going to prove anything.

The race is way to short and not enough space to over take.

next time.. take your time and drive normal and he has the balls to slow down and wait for you... then you let him have it.

You can give Honda Accord 3 second head start..and it will still take some time catch up.

Coalman, if you were driving up US-19 in USC, that guy driving the GXP was me! If so, nice run! If not, ignore this reply!

FWIW, my car only has 500 miles on it, and I was short shifting... I do plan on some mods very soon, after the first oil change. It would be great if we had someplace other than the streets to race our cars, here in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Somewhere we could hold a 'grudge night', or a 'run-what-you-brung' race...

I absolutely love all AMG vehicles, and think very highly of the skilled engineers and technicians who design and build them. Glad you had the sense to know when to back off as well...

With about $2000 in mods, on top of the $38k I paid for the car (1 of only 78 in my color that will be made for 2009), I'd like to think I have a relative performance bargain compared to your car... ;-)

Plus, nobody knows what the G8 GXP is...until it's too late! A real sleeper!

Hope to see ya again!

Yep, that was me on route 19 just north of Mexico City. For the money you have a very quick car. I don't think I'll be looking for a rematch after your mods, although I am considering a pulley and tune myself.

Welcome! You should do a real race before and after mods. I was seriously considering either a new G8 GXP or Challenger SRT-8 (and nothing else) before I got my E55. I ended up getting the used E55 after a ton of research.

The GXP has some balls to it. I took one for a spin a few months ago and thought the drive train was pretty sharp - in fact, the first comparison in my mind was to the E55. When you stepped on it, it had the same get up and go responsiveness. Sleeper is a good word for it and you gotta know what your looking at to tell the difference between the three models. To bad that it's going bye-bye so quickly. My bet is that we see it in a year or two as a Buick Riviera.

For you to reel him in after such a deficit is pretty good. Be proud of your machinery.

W211 E55's are now ranging anywhere from the mid 20's for a older car with higher mileage, up to the high 30's/low 40's for 2006 cars with low mileage. If your comparing new to new, then yes you are correct that $38k vs. ~$90k is a bargain, but not anymore for the used ones.

Comparing New to Used reminds me of people who compare Stock to Modded. Kinda pointless, imo.

Great buy, the GXP.

Yes, it is all about the gear and getting the drop. Always take the MOVE from a roll and never MOVE if you are not in your sweet spot!

I saw a G8 GXP and tried to race him but he would not move..His custom plate said it all,, Xtinc8! LOL

Agreed on both counts. However, I don't think I've ever heard someone say "yeah, you beat me, but how much did you spend on your car?" after a race anyway.

And too bad for Pontiac, they put out a sweet car like the G8 and close up shop. It really is a shame.

Wow. I didn't realize that the GXP had an LS3 in it. I have seen one from time to time back here, and thought it was a good looking car.

Not quite...she has the G8 GT... it has a 6.0 "L76" engine with 361hp. It has the cylinder deactivation system which robs about 20hp. We put a Corsa cat-back on and it woke the car up a bit in the sound department. Next up is an ECU tune and CAI which has been tested to give it 30-35 rwhp on a Dynojet. These cars are tuned from the factory to run on 87 octane, so there is a lot of room for improvement....
