E55 oil change

Looking to change my own oil in my 03 E55.. Do you recommend? Or should I drop it at my mechanic? Also... What oil would the best oil be for 60k?

Thx

I use 0w-40 but its almost worth it to take it to jiffy Lube I took my own oil and they changed it and provided the oil filter so they charged 32 buck which is cheap for a oil filter and change .

Stright forward and for the most part easy to do, Filter is on top so you spill no oil! pull the plastic belly off and the oil pan has 2 sumps so 2 drain plugs. They say that the plug is one time use but I reused mine, I did apply teflon paste to the treads as there is a know issue of sepage. You might consider doing the trans wile your there, your under the milage but might be nice to knock it all out at once.

Best bet is from the dealer, I've heard of some others for the 722. trans but belive it or not the MB fluid is less money.

You'll need 9 quarts of oil, but I'm not sure on the tranny fluid. I'm curious about this myself, as my car is at 70k and has very likely never had the tranny serviced, and i'd like to do it myself in a couple months at my next oil change(no point in paying the stealer big $$$$ for removing a couple of bolts).

FWIW I have put 4,000 miles on the oil currently in my car, and according to the level display on the IC I'm not even down 0.1 quarts, which is pretty amazing to me.

Ive done it, took 5 bottels. Really dont need a DIY thread if your machanicaly inclined, Remove belly pan remove drain plug drain fluid, remove trans pan bolts, pull the filter out, reverse the steps. Common sense should tell you the rest. Working on your car is not for every one, know your limitions.
you Do need to a dip stick to do this job .

correct. i recently took mine to the dealer for tranny service and they used a bottle of ATF cleaner, followed by six 6-packs of ATF.

of course this was a flush and not a drain and fill.

I've done it and it takes 5 quarts. Friggin' bonehead stealer parts counter advised 7 quarts so that's what I poured in. After a test drive and a TON of smoke from overfilling it, I bought the $$ dipstick and verified I was WAY over the max. I drained part of the fluid..about 2 quarts. So, essentially I did a partial "flush" as well

Well this statment seems to be lacking any usefullness, - guess if you want to spend a few grand on shop grade transmission flush machine then by all means. How ever if all you want to do is drain the 80 percent of the fluid and replace the trans filter in your own garage with you own basic hand tools then I promise you its 5 bottles of MB fluid. I'm pretty sure this thred was a guy asking for DIY info. Instead of open ended statments that don't help please share you personal exspeirance to help out.

I agree. He knew I was a do it yourselfer so highly unlikely I have a flush machine (although I do have a lift in the garage After draining fluid, I BELIEVE I netted only 3.5 to 4 quarts. IOW, I would start with 3.5 to maybe 4 qts and then measure it with the dipstick. As a side note, I am not sure it was mentioned but to buy a new washer and maybe even a drain plug for peace of mind.

i havent had any issues since my transmission service (3 months ago). car shifts smoothly and i am getting better MPG than before (avg 16.5 - 17 city). not a huge improvement, but i didnt buy the car for being a fuel miser anyway.

as for the 7 quarts mentioned earlier, was the torque converter drained as well? i know earlier gerneration MBs have a drain plug for the torque converter. not sure if ours do as well...just a thought.

FYI - Auto Trans takes 8.0 US qts...page 469 of the good book

Found this DIY article on the interweb for changing the trans fluid. It indicates aforementioned torque converter drain plug too. Keep in mind that this is a generic 722.6 trans with no mention of torque converter model.

Yup, I remember that now too. You'll be surprised at how much oil gets left behind in the front of the sump.
