Just Picked up 2005 E55 Some Questions

Hey guys. I have been reading the forum for quite a while now and finally took the plunge and bought a low mileage E55 - 18,000 miles to be exact. The car amazing. It is certfied by Mercedes and I also purchased an extended 2 year warrenty to be safe.

So I have had the car for a few weeks now and want to be sure everything is in order supercharger, IC, IC pump and airfilters. Can someone give me some pointers when looking over these systems? this might sound stupid But where exactly are the air filters and are the K&N worth it? How do I check for problems with the IC pump?

On another note, I have noticed the adaptive tranny working since it felt faster and more aggressive initially but now feels more reserved like it lost some power. I tried the reset today so I will see how that goes. I also own an ML550 and which has the adaptive tranny also and did the same thing. I am not a real big fan since it make some assumptions based on driving style and take some of the fun out of the drive when you really want to get on it.

What else should I be aware of in terms of potential problems and issues to check for now?

I appreciate your help and guidance.

Tom

Very pretty car. Can you cancel your extended warranty and then buy the Chrysler warranty? You will probably get a warranty for twice as long for half the price and still have the work done at a Mercedes dealership....

Well that is interesting information. At this point I probably could cancel it but is it worth it? Is the Chrysler warranty better than the Mercedes Warranty? After all I paid to extend the original Mercedes warranty. I plan on bringing the car for every little thing I can find...

I do have another question about the brakes. They lack initial bite but seem to work well when you stand on them. Is that the norm? I know the system isn't a true hydraulic system. What should I expect from the brakes? Should I have them looked at? The car only has 18,000 miles but not sure if brakes were done but judging from the last owner I would say so. They had the oil changed every 3,0000 miles.

I really got lucky with this car...

Very nice low mileage car. The IC pump u cant really notice until you race someone. The best way is ask the dealer to upgrade ur pump since you have the Mercedes warranty. Nice car again !

I bought the warranty from reading this very forum and reading about everyone's great experience with the Chrysler warranty. It has a $100 deductible. You don't have to get the warranty until you want it, and if you buy it right before the CPO expires, no car inspection is necessary.

As for the brakes, mine have great bite, but it may just be how these work compared to what you are used to driving.

Can you elaborate on that? What would happen when I race someone? I would lose? Would i feel something odd? Loss of power?

Normal usage the break should be fine. The last time I changed my ex-car (E500) was at 35k miles front break, your car is only 18K unless the ex-owner drove it hard and only in the city. Rear break last 50k to 70k depend how u drive...

Yes, if your IC pump fail while you are racing you could lose because supercharge will shut down. Well, u will still have 350hp ... You can search in this forum, many people have change the IC pump for less than $200

Is there a way to test if it is working or not? Does that have to do with the thread on bleading the IC?

If it were me, I'd have it replaced as a prophylactic measure and for peace of mind, it's not that expensive

What does Mercedes charge? Will they cover it under the warranty?

Hey mamba, I just purchased my E55 not to long ago and had alot of the same questions as you did. For the first week i took it easy on the car and one night decided to run the piss out of it. so what i did to find out the pump is failing was take it on an empty road and practice safety haha. Do like 3 pulls going through the gears at full throttle, if it dosent shut off on 4th pull back to back it should be fine, mine shuts off after two runs. Most members change it for peace of mind cause you can get a Johnson pump for 145$. As for the K&N filters, i took apart my airboxes to get to the filters and there was a ecosystem in there, went to two diff pep boys and picked them up and was impressed with the slight diff it made. hope this helps.

Hi mamba I too just picked up my E55 with CPO but opt not to buy the MB extended warranty because of cost and the Chrysler warranty covers the same parts for half the price and 2-3 times longer in coverage. If you have any concerns regarding your brakes not having the stopping power and loss of power have the dealer inspect it. I believe it's part of the CPO. I'm not alone in this forum to say that these brakes are great phenomenal. Congrats to your new baby

Thanks guys for all your comments. Still just trying to learn about the car. I have a Dodge Viper which is highly modded and learned by simply reading the forums. Information here is so valuable to new enthusiasts.

The car is going in to check the IC pump, brakes and what ever else they can check under warrenty. I hope to convince them to replace the pump.

I Wish I would have done some research here about the warranty. Do you think it is too late to cancel the extended warranty and purchase the Chrysler? Aside from the obvious prior relationship with MB, how is Chrysler selling a warranty for the E55? Mercedes will accept the warranty coverage?

One more question. I noticed when my car is in sport mode and shifts to second under light throttle, there is a stutter at roughly 1,900 rpm. Doesnt do it under more aggressive throttle or full throttle. Is it the adaptive tranny learning? As noted i have a ML550 and it did something similar when I first got it and changing into second. It seemed like it couldnt figure out if I want to stay in first and shift to second.

My only pet peive with this car or mercedes in general is the adaptive transmission.

Yep. Esp when stuck in stop and go for a while. AMG should have put in a "reset back to normal" button.......

Yes, you can cancel your MB warranty contract. I believe they give you a full refund within 90 days of purchase. Call MB warranty for details. Someone in this forum posted that MB still has 20% stake in Chrysler but I can not find any proof in the financial section. In a case all the post in this forum has been very positive, so that's what I going with. Experience of the mass is good enough for me.

my understanding was that up until the regular MB warranty, i can get 100% refund. after that, i believe it could be pro-rata(CA law?). as for chrysler warranty, i've heard good things, but i'm not sure it's BETTER than the CPO/MB warranty. for one, $100 deductible can add up quite quickly over a 2-3 yrs period. secondly, i think MB's warranty is close to bumper-to-bumper, but i'm not sure on the chrylser...esp for AMGs. we have 7 yrs/100k on R500, but i wouldn't mind taking that up higher if chrysler would do that.

Did you happen to purchase that car from a dealer in Ohio?

I was seriously considering flying to Ohio last month to buy that car. I liked the fact that it had very low mileage, but I ended up buying a local 1 owner with 35k miles. That car looked great in the pictures, I just decided it was easier to buy the local one.

I liked the fact that your car was a CPO, but it didn't matter too much in the end because I ended up buying the Chrysler warranty with an additional 5 years/70k miles for $2885. Congrats on the new ride!

Do you mind me asking what you paid?
