undertray removal

Has anyone removed the undertray from underneath the engine compartment to allow for more airflow? Do you think doing this will help reduce some of the underhood heat? To remove this ad, register today or login if you already are registered!

Doesn't that play a huge part in aerodynamics?

The only problem with removing the tray is that it is designed to direct the airflow underneath the car and by removing that you will alter the airflow.

seriouly, how many time do you drive fast enough for "aerodynamics" to come in and affect your driving. I take mine off during the summer and put them back in the winter. I do not drive my car in the winter, but on the really nice winter day I may take the E out. On the side note, it help a lot when you work on your car if you do not have the under trays. I constantly drop my tools, nuts, bolts,.....so it really help not having the trays there.

I have cut an opening in the first under tray below the heat exchanger. I don't know if it helps. The reason I did this is because I saw the undertray of a S65 and it had openings on the tray under the heat exchanger.

I keep it off in the summer and put it on for the winter. I've been told it keeps the heat off your engine during the summer. I also belive it helps with aero dynamic. I'm sure MB did not put this cover for show, it has some added value.

I figured the heat will excavate rather quickly when the vehicle is in motion. Even sitting idling it should help somewhat. Spotting a leaking oil drain plug will also be very simple since that's what I'm dealing with right now. Anyone ever use teflon tape on the drain plugs?

I would leave them alone... gets your engine dirty quicker and more water exposure. Specially if you live in desert areas or in windy locations.

Instead, remove the vent plastic cover on your hood and remove the sound pading on your hood..

I would only remove maybe during 1/4 track times.. where top speed is not a factor.

Enjoy having road debris smacking your 3 oil pans much? Not to mention the sensors and boots hiding down there. Leave it on.

Oh and the engine doesnt generate that much heat when you're standing still at idle, thats why its called idle, and why the fan turns on and off instead of running constantly.

HOT air rises it doesn't escape fromt he bottom, this will not help get heat out of the car very much. It will hurt the Aerodynamics more.

The middle undertray contains ducts that route cold air to the alternator and something else on the other side of the engine. I leave mine on all the time, except when I'm changing the oil, which I just did about 2 hours ago. It takes all of 5 minutes to remove them, and I can't think of any benefit to leaving them off.

Those ducts are behind the belt-driven accessories. It looks to me like they lead to the headers or somewhere in that area.
