Question Engine Light on + "sszz" sound after installing KLEEMANN headers on E55

Last week I installed the KLEEMANN headers as I wrote in one of the threads, I noticed that engine light came on and then disappeared and then again came on and it has been few days and I am driving the car most of the day.

Another issue, I am hearing sound like "sszz" when I step on the accelerator even a little bit while in drive mode " D or S or M ", The sound looks like there maybe a leak somewhere, but we tried to look around the welding areas and nothing seems to be bad.

Anyway, installed the KLEEMANN headers who can share his/her experience on this matter?

Solution for the engine light?

Solution for the this sound ssss, Primary Cat. had to be removed to make the headers fit in the system.

All your feedbacks and comments are welcome.

That ssss is most likely an exhaust leak. How did you tighten up the headers? Take a look for carbon coming from any connections.

Well, first of all, a dump thing was done which was using the old stock headers gaskets as I did not noticed the new ones on the shipment ( I have a doubt that this might be the reason for ssss ). Most of the mechanics says that this is normal, but I don't think it is normal.

99dirtybirdws6, what do you mean by how was the headers tighten? with the bolts and the the connection between headers and down pipe also by bolts ( do you ask this because using V-band would be better? )

skratch77, How to scan the codes? Can I do it manually or do I need to take it to dealer or MB shop?

I'm referring to the order with which you tightened the bolts. Did you tighten from one side to the other? or Tighten the outside bolts and work you way in or vice versa?

Last night a local member installed some kleeman's and he had the CEL, it was a engine misfire. We connected the obdii scanner and cleared all the codes out. Kleeman headers do make a sound to make one think there is a leak, when actually there is not.

I don't know how the mechanic tightened really, what's the right way?

VERY important not to beat on it until you get this resolved.

Header leak can be bad BAD!

Try to check on those gaskets and bolts.

So hard with typing describing sounds but does it sound like rushing air or does it sound like a buzzzzzzzz.

Sometimes the headers are come in contact with parts of the body and start to make noise. I had headers touching the heat shield even just a touch and it drove me insane. Couple whacks with the hammer on the shield and sanity was back for me.

First I would replace the gasket with a new one made for the Kleeman header. Then tighten it in the proper sequence and according to the correct torque (ask Kleeman about that, sometimes tightening it in the wrong sequence and to the wrong torque will not provide a proper seal).

Then recheck the tightness (torque) of the bolts after the engine goes through a complete heat-cycle.

Clear the codes.

Didnt use the new gaskets oh man that needs to be fixed asap. Who installed your headers? I noticed the engine bay to be a bit louder but i was told that the headers are thinner than stock so you can hear a clicking type sound from the cylinders.

Thanx all for your feedbacks. I guess the first thing to start with is to change the gaskets and then I can start looking somewhere else if the problem was not fixed.

Agreed - what the OP could be hearing, is just more overt exhaust valve "tick" noises, since you have freer-flowing headers + fairly large primary-cat-delete DPs.

So, even while nothing *might* be wrong, SOP is to have it all thoroughly double and triple-checked by an experienced (with MB/AMG) mechanic, as others mention.

^^ Exactly what Kleemann told me after I enquired about the strange leak type noise.

Mine actually leaked. The connection used from header to down pipe is not very good and if you don't line up down pipe/header properly before welding your screwed.

Thanx a lot for your feedbacks, advises, or comments on this issue. I managed to change gaskets and check the system again for any leak, I ended up with same result , the sound is still there, ssszzz while accelerating which is really annoying.

Don't know what to do to delete this sound which for me it is a noise. Some of the members commented that this is normal for KLEEMANN headers.
