Powdercoating wheels..Good or bad?

Hey guys, ive been reading a lot of threads of Powder coat vs paiting and have realized that a lot of people like powdercoating. I do as well but isnt it bad to powdercoat aluminum wheels. I heard that it weakens the wheel because of the high tempature that it gets done under.....please let me know if otherswise.. The answer is, it depends on the wheel and the powder coating method. Two related URLs here:

Hope that helps,

Thanks...i had read those but kinda doesn't say if its still safe or not...but thanks for your help...I just thought you could but if stats say that it makes the metal weak then i guess it makes it weak and its harmful if powdercoated..

Hey,

Powdercoated my wheels on my Vette over a year ago and many MANY times over 150mph. I nor anyone I know have had a problem. The other positive is that my powdercoat has seemed to hold up better against the rocks and what not more than painted wheels.

Good stuff man thanks...I dont know why but i just thought since powdercoating is at about 350 degrees for about 25 minutes that it may make a forged wheel weaker not the lip but the center...but i guess not...thanks

No problems with powdercoating the wheels. People do it to engine blocks, calipers, all of which take a lot more heat than your wheels. 500 degrees isn't abnormal for calipers (the most commonly powdercoated part) to experience even in just normal driving.

Has anyone seen these AMG wheel powder coated? I want the blacked out look and really can't find anything I like better than my OEM wheels so would like to do the center spokes in black leaving a chrome lip and center emblem but don't know if the chrome causes any issues or if there is anyone out there that has done it.

Thanks!
