Walking on a Thin Line

The Mercedes-Benz A220 4MATIC is an entry-level luxury car that provides a starting point for those that wish to own a car from an ambitious brand like Mercedes-Benz. For the car manufacturer, the profit margins are only attractive as you go up the range. So the A-Class serves as a way for them to get customers interested in the brand.

Perfectly Proportioned

Under the A220's shell is a dynamic and compact car that has all its edges and corners perfectly proportioned. Some have questioned its existence, there already being a CLA that tries to perform the same function. The lower fascia, small headlamps, and majestic grille make a good argument.

An AMG Package

There's an optional AMG Line Package available for buyers for an added $2,600. It adds lowered suspensions, perforated brake discs at the front, distinct bodywork, and a chrome-finish diamond-block grille. For an extra $500 you get 19-inch multi-spoke wheels that complement the entire look.

Power

The A220 churns 188 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. This is thanks to a 2.0-liter turbocharged power unit that allows the vehicle to get from 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds.

Confident and Manageable

The A-Class is a more manageable car compared to its competition. It's controllable and stable around tight corners. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive and lack of air suspensions play a huge role in this. With its small footprint, it only weighs 3,417 pounds. The steering has been tweaked just right to ensure that you have an entertaining drive every time.

Interior

The A220 isn't the roomiest in the Mercedes lineup. Nevertheless, its interior is one of the best places to spend some time in. Parts used do not feel cheap at all. It feels like parts and materials have been carried down from more expensive models such as the E-Class.

Tech and Safety

Out of the two 7-inch screens, one serves as an infotainment center and for HVAC. The other provides controls that would be needed by any regular A220 driver. These come as standard. If you wish to stand out, there's an optional $2,100 Premium Package that comes with two 10.25-inch screens. In addition, you get keyless start, auto-dimming for your mirrors, and blind spot warning. An extra $310 gets you an ambient lighting system with 64 colors.

New Mercedes Infotainment System

The A220 was launched with Mercedes' latest MBUX infotainment system. It's a first, and Mercedes had to make sure it debuted in style. The menu is now less confusing. The user interface has been improved as well. There's also a smart assistant integrated into the system. It's activated in a similar way as Google or Alexa: "Hey Mercedes."

Functional and Responsive

Many in-car voice recognition systems make it extremely difficult to get anything done. Most of the time, we find ourselves opting for the traditional touchscreens and buttons. The Mercedes assistant is refined. You can call out a general search, such as the nearest supermarket, or an entire address. MBUX doesn't require any specific languages. Instead of pulling out your phone, you can easily inquire about anything. The system is also linked to the vehicle's HVAC system to allow you to adjust things like temperature with your voice.

An Extra Navigation Package

Mercedes added an optional navigation system that incorporates augmented reality. It's part of a Multimedia package worth $1,150. Directions are showcased with a clear view of the road. This helps to maneuver unfamiliar routes. We could expect these AR directions to be projected onto the windshield in future models.

Value for Money

Many thought that it was probably not a good idea for Mercedes to venture in this direction. The A-Class is a nimble and stylish car. If you wish to get the very best from Mercedes without all the rear space of a sedan, the A220 is a great alternative. Price starts at $34,500 and can spiral through the roof with several options.
