Intro

When you are buying a Mercedes-Benz C-Class you are expecting to get the peak of luxury and durability. And many of these vehicles are luxurious and durable. However, some can be more problematic than others. The website carcomplaints.com collects data on reported problems for just about every vehicle, including the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. They have reliable data on these vehicles until around the 2000 model year. They capture information such as recalls, Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), and consumer complaints. The data is broken down by model year to show what years have the most and the least reported problems.

Using this data, we put together a list of the eight C-Class models with the most reported problems. We listed them in order from the least to the most problematic. If you are in the market for a used C-Class, you may want to reference this list so you can see what you should look out for with each model.

As a reminder, a recall is an official recall issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A TSB is an official communication between Mercedes-Benz and their dealers regarding a specific issue and how to fix it. An investigation is when NHTSA investigates serious safety problems which may or may not lead to a recall.

8. 2007 C230 Problems: 15

We start our list with the 2007 C230. It earns a spot here because of the 15 total reported problems. And these are not minor issues either. The bulk of the complaints centered around engine balance shaft failures. The second most common issue was fuel leaks. The car was also recalled multiple times for sunroof panels that may become detached. But if you are willing to take your chances on these cars they can be purchased for a reasonable amount. The car you see pictured here just sold on Bring a Trailer last month for a little over $8K.

7. 2008 C300 Problems: 15

The 2008 C300 has the same number of reported problems as the 2007 C230, but we ranked it below the C230 because the C300 has twice as many recalls and TSBs. By far the most common complaint with this car had to do with electrical issues. Issues with the steering system was the second most commonly reported problem. But the high number of recalls is another area of concern. Most recalls were related to airbag issues but there were recalls for various system failures as well. However, these can still be fun and enjoyable cars as long as you address the recalls and are aware of the common problem areas. This 6-speed manual version sold on Bring a Trailer a few months ago for $16,500.

  • Recalls – 8
  • TSBs – 145
  • Investigations – 3

6. 2009 C300 Problems: 17

Normally the longer a car is on the market the less problems it has. The manufacturer is able to learn from the previous model year and address weakness for subsequent model years. But that is not the case here. The 2009 C300 actually has a few more reported problems than the 2008 version. The good news is that the electrical issues seem to be sorted, as they were not reported nearly as often as they were in the 2008 car. But there were more steering issues reported on the 2009 model. And several reports of a broken sub frame were also logged against the 2009 C300. If the issues don’t scare you away, these cars can be a bargain. This one sold on Bring a Trailer last year for just over $8K.

  • TSBs – 105
  • Investigations – 3

5. 2001 C320 Problems: 18

The 2001 C320 is the oldest car on our list. With that in mind, we cut it a little bit of slack, but it still had a number of problems that need to be called out. First on the list are brake-related problems, but just behind it are electrical gremlins. Brake issues are obviously a big concern but chasing down electrical problems can be frustrating. Recalls covered things like sunroof panels that would detach, instrument cluster failures, and the hoses for the Active Body Control system failing. All that being said, these cars can typically be found for less than any of the others on our list. This one with just 45-thousand miles on it sold last year for less than $7K on Bring a Trailer.

  • Recalls – 6
  • TSBs – 56
  • Investigations – 2

4. 2016 C300 Problems: 23

We jump right from the oldest car on our list to the newest. The 2016 C300 may be 15 years newer than the C320, but it has significantly more reported problems. And those problems are severe. Engine failure was the most common complaint. Cracked pistons were reported by a number of owners. That is obviously a major issue. But there were also quite a few reports of a strong fuel smell. Top it all off with a staggering 13 recalls and this is one of the most problematic C-Class cars out there. But it is not the worst.

  • Recalls – 13
  • TSBs – 102
  • Investigations – 2

3. 2013 C250 Problems: 26

The 2013 C250 comes with a 1.8L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 201 horsepower. And unfortunately, a lot of folks reported issues with this engine and that is why this car lands at number three on our list. A faulty camshaft adjuster solenoid was the most common complaint, but rough running and laggy acceleration were also complaints. This car also received a number of complaints about the interior door handles breaking. That is not what you would expect from a Mercedes-Benz.

  • Recalls – 7
  • TSBs – 99
  • Investigations – 1

2. 2015 C300 Problems: 29

Well, if you have a 2013 C250 and are looking for some good news, here you go. The 2015 C300 has even more engine-related problems reported than the 2013 C250. Broken pistons, clogged PVC valves, engine knocking, and oil pans leaks are just some of the engine problems reported. To make matters worse the car also received quite a few electrical system complaints. Most of these seem centered around the Collison Prevention Assist system.

  • Recalls – 11
  • TSBs – 91
  • Investigations – 3

1. 2012 C250 Problems: 31

The 2012 C250 is the winner (or is it the loser?) for the most reported problems on a Mercedes-Benz C-Class. And guess what? It is engine issues that once again lead the pack. Mercedes-Benz had some real issues with C-Class engines in this era. The overwhelming complaint against the 2012 C250 is engine rattles on cold start. But there were also multiple reports of engine failures and even engine fires. There were also some electrical system and transmission complaints, but these paled in comparison to the number of engine complaints with this car. If you are in the market for one of these, make sure you have it thoroughly looked over by a mechanic you trust.
