New GT

Mercedes brought out the big guns for Monterey Car Week this year, unveiling their newest AMG GT sports car. Mercedes-AMG's 2024 GT coupe takes a fresh direction, drawing inspiration from the latest SL roadster, prioritizing grand-touring aspects. The design showcases elegance with a sleek appearance, featuring an aluminum space frame blended with steel, magnesium, and carbon-fiber components.

Longer Body

Dimensions have slightly increased—7.1 inches longer, 1.6 inches wider, and 2.8 inches more axle space. Active aero systems include underbody elements and an active rear spoiler, with an optional Aerodynamics package for added aerodynamic features.

The Looks

Subjectively speaking, we don't know about you, but we're loving the new design. Sure it loses some of its classical long hood proportions with the mass of the cabin pushed all the way to the rear in order to gain a 2+2 configuration. But the new silhouette is about as pretty as a true GT vehicle gets. Some would argue it's too similar to the 911. To those people, we'd say... touche.

Practical Performance

The GT's redesign aims to meet customer demands for practicality and performance. The rear-wheel-drive layout is replaced by a variable all-wheel-drive system, capable of distributing torque up to 50 percent to the front wheels or 100 percent to the rear.

4.0 Biturbo V8

The known twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine produces 469hp and 516lb-ft of torque in the GT55, and 577hp and 590lb-ft in the GT63. The new nine-speed automatic transmission with a clutch pack is now positioned directly behind the engine, impacting weight distribution but benefiting interior space.

Features

Key features include rear-wheel steering, electronically controlled limited-slip differential, optional nose-lift system, and adaptive dampers. The Dynamic Select system offers multiple drive modes and launch control. The GT63 can potentially reach 60 mph in about three seconds.

Interior

The interior is more luxurious and spacious, with an optional panoramic glass roof, turbine-like vents, and an 11.9-inch center touchscreen. Sport seats are standard and can be upgraded. More rear space allows for optional fold-down seats or storage.

More Space

The hands-free power-actuated rear hatch reveals ample cargo space. The car targets competition with the Porsche 911 Turbo, focusing on all-wheel drive and usability. Pricing details are pending, with expectations aligned with the current SL55 and SL63 models—around $142,350 and $184,050, respectively. The release is anticipated in the first half of the upcoming year.
