1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Turns Heads

This car spent years in longterm storage but, thankfully, the seller took the time to restore it to its former glory.

Recently Sold

This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL was auctioned off at the end of March for $125,000. So apologies if any readers were hoping to add this model to their collection. It had been in longterm storage for many years before the seller purchased it in 2012.

Expensive Work

Like many cars which come out of longterm storage, this model needed some work. The seller had some body-off restoration work done for a client between 2014-2015 which cost them around $70,000.

Rebuilds

The invoice for the work performed between 2014-2015 shows that both the 1.9-liter inline-four engine and 4-speed manual transmission were rebuilt. It also states that, among other things, new brake lines were installed. So you can be sure this model goes and stops just as it should.

New Style

When the mechanical rebuilds were carried out, the seller also changed this 190SL's exterior color. It was originally finished in White Gray (158), but the seller changed this to a Medium Gray finish using two-stage PPG paint.

Beautiful Interior

The seller also had new red leather upholstery fitted during the refurbishment. This is wonderfully contrasted by the body-colored dashboard. The red leather seats are matched by the car's floor mats and red visors, although an extra set of clear visors come with the car.

Selection of Tops

Of course, if the sun's out, the only way to drive this 190SL is with the top down. But, should the heavens open up, there's a couple of options to keep the driver and passenger dry. During the refurbishment, the seller had a replacement black soft top put in. The car also comes with a matching hardtop, although the seller suggested that the chrome trim should be replaced.

Factory Wheels

In a world of huge, brash rims these 13" factory steel wheels are a breath of fresh air. They're fitted with body-colored hubcaps and wide whitewall tires which go with the gray paint job perfectly.

Old Meets New

Classic cars are great, but there are still some modern features that are always nice to have. This 190SL, for instance, has a period tri-band radio but there's a modern Kenwood head unit with Bluetooth and a USB input hiding in the glove box.

Clean Engine

This model's odometer shows just 46,000 miles, which isn't bad for a 60-year-old car. But its 1.9-liter engine and 4-speed manual transmission have seen just 1,000 miles of road since they were overhauled by German Eurotech in Dallas, Texas. Purists out there will be happy to know that the engine, transmission, and chassis numbers all match too.

Everything you Need

This 190SL comes with all the documents that you'd expect to find accompanying such a well-maintained machine. The lucky new owner received the original owner's manual, a tool kit, and copies of past registration cards.
