Famous S Class

Many of us remember seeing this 1996 Mercedes S-Class coupe pop up on an eBay auction last summer, shortly after the airing of The Last Dance docuseries. In the ESPN feature, the car is shown alongside legendary Michael Jordan. The Mercedes was purchased by Jordan in 1995 and customized by Lorinser. The NBA GOAT owned the car until 2003.

Auctioned Last Year

The custom touches may be subtle, but they do enough to distinguish Jumpman's ride from others. The original eBay auction was held by Beverly Hills Car Club in August. The buzz around the series was still very much present, and the seller figured to take advantage of the hype and get as much for the Mercedes as possible.

Astronomical Sale

The first bid was, appropriately, placed at $23. It wasn't long though, before the bidding contest flew past the $100,000 mark. By the end, the winning bid was a whopping $202,200. And that goes to show how much immediate weight the association with Jordan's name carries. Not to mention an appearance in a critically acclaimed ESPN series.

Listed Again?

The eBay auction was over and everyone moved on. That was until just a few days ago, when the same car made another appearance on an auction site. This time, it's Bring a Trailer. And curiously, the S600 is listed by the same Beverly Hills Car Club that had it for sale last year. So, what happened?

Cancelled Sale, Back on Market

According to the seller, the auction was legitimate. However, the buyer failed to come up with the funds in time... Ah the beauty of eBay! Needless to say, the sale was cancelled. And the car is now back on the market, with the BaT auction set to end in a few short hours.

Showing its Age

And the current bid is hovering around $23,000. A far cry from the $200K offered for it following the car's 15 minutes of fame. But still a high price for a 1996 Mercedes S600, especially considering the 157K miles on the odometer. And a used car's undercarriage never lies. You can tell by looking down here, the car has seen better years. Still, Jordan's name will have internet car shoppers bidding until the last second!
