2019 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 is Ready to Hunt Down V8 Muscle Cars

This could be the four-cylinder car to convince most V8 performance sedan owners that times are indeed changing.

The very fast four-door coupe

Many people take issue with Mercedes-Benz saying that its CLA is a coupe, when it has four doors, instead of only two. But Mercedes is well within its rights to name the sloping roofline sedan a coupe, as the original French description has more to do with overall vehicle shape and silhouette, than the number of doors. And this new CLA 45 AMG, is one very potent four-door coupe.

Looks even better with go-faster bits

The standard CLA is an attractive car, with its curved roofline, but add in some AMG styling upgrades and the overall appearance elevates to something even more striking. AMG bumpers, rocker panel, and even a subtle trunk spoiler really complete the purposeful appearance of this 2020 CLA 45 AMG.

No other compact sedan has its coupe-like profile

The CLA shape is defined by its rear-view. Note the angle of that rear window, the shape of its trunk and how those styling elements are balanced by a set of oversized AMG exhaust ends. AMG could easily have ruined the fluid shape of Mercedes-Benz's CLA, but its design upgrades for the CLA 45 are perfectly judged and executed.

Big stoppers for a small car

Signaling its purpose and capability, are the CLA 45's front brakes. Partly hidden behind those optional 19-inch wheels are huge discs, actuated by four-piston calipers. The CLA 45 might be a compact car, but it is capable of very high speeds and as such, AMG's engineers decided to equip the car with massive 13.8-inch diameter front brake discs.

Small engine - big numbers

The 2020 CLA 45 has the type of performance which can only be properly exploited on a circuit. Powering the car is AMG's new M139 engine, which has the distinction of also being the world's most powerful 2-liter powerplant. In its most potent 'S' configuration, this engine boasts 416hp and 369 lb-ft. Those numbers are good enough for a 168mph top speed.

A four-cylinder AMG that could probably chase down supercars

It might have an engine which displaces only 2-liters among four-cylinder, but the CLA 45 will comfortably see off larger capacity V8 rivals. With all-wheel-drive traction, a very quick-shifting eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and relatively light curb weight for its power rating, this is a tremendously fast machine. Most rivals will probably see this view of it, from the rear, with those 3.5-inch exhaust ends humbling them.

A cockpit than can be customized

The CLA 45 cabin is an environment you can configure to your desire. The driver's information screen, which replaces traditional analog dials, can be customized with the relevant displays you require: be that for cruising or high-speed track driving. Yellow seat and trim detail does liven up the dark cabin color palette.

Breaking the four-pot mold

With a great deal of presence thanks to its AMG styling, and giant-killing power, the CLA 45 sets new standards for four-cylinder performance. This is truly a vehicle which defies traditional automotive wisdom, offering a driving experience which is unprecedented by four-cylinder standards. You are effectively getting V8 performance, in a much lighter and more agile package.
