Best Selling Mercedes SUV

The G 63 AMG is the only Mercedes-Benz model that sells more units than the standard variant in the United States. This G-Wagen is popular among wealthy fans who don't compromise when it comes to power, off-road performance, and prestige. Once they go shopping, they want it all.

Price

The G 63 starts just below $150,000. Available options can send the marked price soaring through the roof. The guys at Autoblog tested two G 63s with one having extensive options. This is the priciest SUV offered by Mercedes-Benz. Combined with impeccable power and capability, it's enough reason to have some of us rushing to the dealer.

Available Options

Available options include a $3,950 Night Black Magno matte paint and an Edition 1 package that goes for $23,500. The spare tire ring, trim, brush guard, and mirrors come in Obsidian Black. An Edition 1 emblem has been stuck to the sides and floor mats. The mirrors add red accents to break the predominant black. All lighting comes with a dark grey tint. The 22-inch AMG wheels and side exhaust are also painted black. Additional features from the Edition 1 package include massaging, heated, and ventilated leather seats; carbon fiber trims; and an AMG steering wheel.

Status Symbol with Raw Power

There's a difference in output between the G 550 and AMG G 63 variant. The latter is an excessive and decadent beast that moves with brute force. It's worth the price for a status symbol that does not compromise on drivability and comfort. Unlike its predecessor, it's more comfortable, easier to drive, and stable when driving down the road. The driving position feels better and there's now more room for other passengers.

Character and Capability

According to Autoblog's Editor-in-Chief, Greg Migliore, the G 63 is a capable and iconic vehicle that carries a rich interior and conspicuous design. The driving character has been refined to make the truck easier to handle during daily driving. Mercedes-AMG was careful to maintain its original rugged feeling while giving it celebrity status.

Completely Unnecessary

Autoblog Senior Editor, John Beltz Snyder, decided to drive his G 63 through the woods and onto the wet crunchy snow while his wife took the driveway. He bounced the beast across his snowy lawn and parked it in front of his house. His wife, who had taken the driveway in her Mercedes, found his lawn mess completely unnecessary. What Snyder got from it was that the G 63 is a flashy, extremely capable, powerful, and expensive car that nobody needs.

Cool in All Ways

The G 63's charm has been packed in a rather elegant yet crude way. For instance, the door slams when closed. The styling and locking differentials are only small drops in a large ocean of pure performance. The point doesn't lie in it having bad fuel economy or it being expensive, the point lies in the fact that it's simply a G-Wagen.

No Key-less Entry, But that's Intentional

The G 63 doesn't come with keyless entry. The team at Autoblog decided to inquire from Mercedes-AMG why this was so. The AMG team wanted to maintain the same locking mechanism that is present in the old model. The exclusive feel and iconic sound that one gets form opening and closing the doors is simply priceless, and Mercedes had no plans of changing that.
