New Concepts

During an IAA Mobility Show week where most manufacturers focused their attention on their 'electric' future, the company with the three-pointed star was no exception. Mercedes-Benz and its various sub-brands have had a lot to show the world in Munich. With the unveiling of the unsettlingly high-tech Vision AVTR, a showing from Mercedes-Maybach, and even a new Smart concept, there was a lot for Mercedes loyalists to process.

The German make also displayed how the long-running G-Class will fit in with the industry's electrified future. Dubbed the EQG, this concept off-roader previews the way forward for the G-Wagen as a part of Mercedes' EQ family of electric vehicles. The concept features the recognizable two-tone color combination that we've seen in EQ concepts in the past few years.

Retro-Futuristic

While it visually maintains the majority of the current G-Class model's looks and proportions, the incorporation of an electric drivetrain dictates a few changes from the gasoline-powered version. The front fascia has been treated to the familiar techy look that's been established by other EQ products. The retro-futuristic look is complemented by those awesome wheels!

Design Exercise

The EQG concept is far from ready fro production, though. It is likely meant to serve as a design exercise more than anything. And perhaps also to test the waters and make sure no riots break out over the potential electrification of such a legendary vehicle nameplate!

Capable Off-Roader

Not many details have been shared in regards to the vehicle's performance, range, etc. of yet. We can only assume that the electric version of the G-Wagen will likely be just as capable as the non-EV model. Though, in this day and age, the Mercedes off-road beast is used way more often by celebrities, urban moms, and those chasing a certain level of status.

Future 2021

Perhaps the most interesting part of the EQG reveal was the teaser video. The Mercedes-Benz design and marketing teams had a bit of fun creating this piece. It shows the EQG as an essential part of "Future 2021," an epic 70s space opera that explores the future of mobility. Check it out on YouTube!
