The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen has a long and impressive history of looking good on the street and conquering off-road trails. Here is a beautiful compilation of MBWorld members capturing the beast in its natural habitat.

Mercedes G Wagons Shine In The Wilderness

Simple in its design, yet iconic in its presence, the Mercedes G-Wagon is arguably the brand's most capable vehicle. In this slideshow, we've put together some of our favorites from our very own MBWorld forum members. In this forum thread, owners show off their W460, W461, and W463 generation Geländewagen.

G550 4x4 Stands Tall

A G-wagon image collection wouldn't be complete without the biggest version of all, the 4x4². Standing 7 feet 4 inches tall, the G500 4x4² is the mightiest and most outrageous G-wagon ever. Barring the wild 6x6, of course. Portal axles give this G-wagon its unique capabilities, but we still see plenty of "standard" G-wagons conquer rough terrain.

Overlanding Done In Style

You'll have a tough time finding a better adventure companion than your G-Wagen. As we can see here, overlanding looks like it is a favorite pastime of this particular Mercedes. Sporting a rooftop tent and an awning, you can call anywhere "home." And with a winch and oversized off-road tires, we really mean anywhere.

TE37 All The Things!

While some G-Wagens are used off-road, others stay on the paved stuff. What else stays on the paved stuff? Race cars. And racecars wear Volk TE37's. OK, so it might be a bit of a stretch to call a G55 a race car, but this setup is honest about its intentions. We dig it.

Even The Older Ones Are Epic

You don't have to have a modern era W463 G-Wagen to have fun. This W461 shows that the concept of this vehicle has been to put capability first. Sand? No problem for this German brute. While the concept has been capability first, dependability and durability rank right up there as well.

The More Luxurious Side Of The G-wagen

Mercedes has a motto of "The Best Or Nothing." So it's no surprise that the G-Wagen's capabilities were eventually coupled with high levels of luxury. AMG models like this G63 add immense power and fine leather appointments. It'll embarrass sports cars in a straight line, and yet still be capable off-road if you choose.

AMG Power In The Powder

This G63 AMG owner has no problem getting their ride snowy and salty. A simple set of winter tires does make a world of difference for the G63 AMG when the mercury drops. Where some soft-roaders and mall-crawlers have a sense of accomplishment with shiny paint, G-Class owners often showcase the fact that their ride can be the best of both worlds.

G-wagen in its natural habitat.

They didn't come from the factory with a winch and bead-locking off-road tires, but oftentimes, that's all that's needed to turn a G-Wagen into a dedicated off-roader. Here we see an older W461 enjoying the road less traveled. Our forum thread mentioned earlier not only shows off how to build an off-road G-Wagen, but also suggests places where you can test their abilities.

More Variety Than You'd Expect!

G-Wagons are most popular in their 4-door configurations, but that doesn't mean there aren't more versions out there. Search in older catalogs and you'll find 2-door versions, Cabrio short-wheelbase versions, and more! Even we'll admit the black short-wheelbase G-Wagen shown in the middle looks like a cartoon. But we'd still drive it!
