Successor to the SLS

The AMG GT was first introduced in 2014 as the successor to the SLS. Mercedes' mission was to develop a direct rival to the Porsche 911. Just like the Porsche, the automaker made the GT's lineup just as powerful and performance-oriented. Let's take a look at how far the Mercedes has come with the AMG GT.

Confusing Lineup

The 911 has 24 variants covering numerous body styles. Mercedes wasn't oblivious to this. It made sure that the GT's lineup was equally mind-boggling in every possible way.

Three Body Types

The AMG GT can be split into 3 body types - coupe, roadster, and the 4-door coupe. The first two ride on a similar platform. The 4-door coupe sits on a different structure and was released to rival the Porsche Panamera.

Coupe

The coupe is available in 5 variants: the standard GT, GT C, GT R, GT S, and the new GT R Pro. Each is powered by a 4-liter biturbo V8 that's linked to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

More Power as You Move Up

As you move up through the Coupe lineup, each successive trim is more powerful and more aggressive than the last. The base GT, for example, churns 469 horsepower. The GT S pumps 515 horsepower. The GT C adds 35 horses to this to produce 550 horsepower. Both the R and Pro variants make 577 horses. The more the power, the faster the GT. 0-60 times move from 3.9 seconds in the standard trim to 3.7 seconds in the GT S, 3.6 seconds in the GT C, and 3.5 seconds in the GT R.

Roadster

The AMG GT Roadster is the actual droptop variant within the lineup. The GT C was only built to fill the gap that exists between the GT S and the GT R. The Roadster also features the least number of trim levels when compared to the coupe. It will come as a limited version for the 2020 model year. Mercedes will make only 750 examples. The 0-60 mph time will remain the same as the coupe, but the trunk size is reduced by 4.3 cubic feet.

GT 4-Door Coupe

The GT 4-Door Coupe is a sports car with 4 doors. Mercedes managed to build a luxurious and comfortable track weapon that features smart technology and ample safety. Currently, there are four trim levels: the entry-model GT43, an eco-friendly GT53, the high-performing GT63, and a top-of-the-line GT63 S. Rumors have it that a GT73 is in development. It will be powered by a hybrid version of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that's found in the GT63 S.
