A Dinosaur Facing Extinction

AMG Chief Tobias Moers recently confirmed that the monstrous AMG V12 engine is now taking its last breath. The 6.0-liter biturbo power unit also brings to an end the long success of the legendary S-Class that has carried the S65 nameplate. For power-hungry petrolheads, the news comes as bitter-sweet.

Limited Edition

The final S65 model is limited to only 130 units worldwide. This makes it a future iconic collectible for any wealthy individual willing to spend.

Tremendous Power

The power metrics offered by the beastly 6.0-liter biturbo V12 remain unchanged. The S65 still produces a startling 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The power is enough to push the 4,960-pound machine to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. In addition, the AMG Driver's Package allows it to reach a top speed of 186 mph.

Distinct Features

The S65 comes with an exclusive and elegant metallic Obsidian Black finish. The engine has a "One Man - One Engine" plaque that's covered in black instead of the usual silver. A high-gloss black can also be found at the tips of the quad exhausts. The side skirts, front air intakes, rear bumper, and 20-inch alloy wheels break the predominant body color with noticeable matte bronze accents. Finally, the AMG crest resting on the C-Pillar reminds everyone that this is not your usual luxury sedan.

Exterior

Naturally, the S65 packs everything that Mercedes can load into a state-of-the-art sedan. The door covers match and the Magic Sky Control panoramic roof only adds to the elegance. There's a Warmth & Comfort Package that's normally available in the First Class rear suite. The tailpipes are painted with a high-gloss black, reinforcing that the S65 means business.

Interior

The lavish interior is mostly black with a few touches of copper contrasts. The center console reminds you that this is a special and limited car with the "1 of 130" plaque. The steering wheel also bears the "S65 Final Edition" mark, showing that it's definitely fancier than the standard wheel. Nappa leather and copper stitching are what mostly meets the eye when it comes to the upholstery. All trim elements are also made of high-quality carbon fiber.

Sticking to the V8

Despite there being no more V12s after the S65, Mercedes-AMG is looking forward to a new hybrid V8 to extend the life of the twin-turbo engine. New AMG models might carry a hybrid 4.0-liter V8 that's more efficient and performance-oriented. Fuel emission and efficiency requirements have also forced Mercedes to downsize in the last few years. The current 4.0-liter biturbo is the successor to a naturally aspirated a 6.3-liter.

Silver Lining

However, according to Moers, Daimler might retain the twin-turbo V12. This means that the engine, also known as the M279, will not disappear completely. It may still carry on in sub-brands such as Maybach with the same power output.

It's Not Just Mercedes

Mercedes is not the only European car brand that is doing away with its monstrous engines. A recent report shows that BMW is also taking into consideration dropping the V12 that comes in the M760Li. The Bavarian flagship might even stop production of the V8. And Bugatti is contemplating ditching the quad-turbo 8-liter W16 carried by the Chiron.

Price

Mercedes is yet to say how much the S65 Final Edition will go for. However, we expect the price to be slightly higher than that of the standard S65, which starts at $232,550.
