Mercedes-AMG Teases the 2020 GT 73

Plans may be underway for a 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT 73. It could run on an electric motor coupled with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that will boost the power to an incredible 895 horsepower. Rumor has it that it could be the quickest and most efficient 4-door GT ever built by Mercedes.

Gratitude

At the very end of last year, the AMG team put up a video saying thank you to its staff and team members who made 2019 a triumphant year for Mercedes' race series. The video showcased a list of names captioned over the many AMG vehicles that were produced and driven throughout the year.

GT 73 Prototype

In the last 2 seconds of the video, AMG showcased a prototype of the fire-breathing AMG GT 4 Door saloon. The car resembles the current GT 63 S, albeit with the sound of an electric motor's note as the car speeds off. This could be the production version of the concept car showcased way back at the Geneva Motor Show in 2017.

Power

AMG is expected to name the car the "AMG GT 73 4Matic". It will run on a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that will channel all the power to the rear axle and an electric motor that will power the front axle. The combined power is expected to total at 895 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

Tribute to The SL73 AMG

The upcoming model will pay tribute to the fourth-generation "73" moniker produced from 1999 to 2001. The vehicle derived its name from its engine which Mercedes-AMG upgraded to a 7.3-liter from the previous 6.0-liter. This amped the power from a mere 389 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque to a mighty 518 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.

Only 85 Examples

Rumor has it that AMG only built 85 of the RL 129-series SL73. Each one was sold to buyers who had previously bought an SL600 model. Owners were also required to deposit about $50,000 with AMG for their services. Rumor also has it that 50 out of the 85 examples made were then sold to the Sultan of Brunei.

Over to Pagani

AMG redesigned the engine before fitting it into its high-performance versions of the models. After a number of applications, it was sent to Horacio Pagani who tweaked the entire engine again to produce 750 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque. Those special engines ran in the Zonda 760 Special Editions.

Quickest Production Car

According to Car Sales, AMG might bring back that nameplate with the intention of making the GT 73 the most powerful four-door production car ever. This comes as no surprise since the GT 63 S already makes 630 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The car tops out at 190 mph and takes only 3.2 seconds to get from 0-60 mph.

Under Three Seconds

The GT 73 is estimated to get from 0-60 mph in just under 3 seconds. With those numbers, the GT 73 could outdo the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-HYbrid by 0.4 seconds or perhaps even more. Since it will be a PHEV, rumor has it that it could be the most efficient GT 4 Door ever built by AMG. Sadly, its all-electric range potential could be just a paltry 31 miles.

There Could be More

In late 2017, Daimler reserved three "73" trademarks in Europe. These were the G 73, S 73, and GLS 73. In early 2018, the automaker did the same in Canada. The 73 model name might also appear in the next SL which is already under development. Engine power could also be transferred to the resurrected Mercedes/McLaren SLR. With all these expectations, there seems to be much to wait for in the upcoming Geneva Motor Show which will take place in March 2020.
