A Monster of a Sports Sedan

This year marks the 30th anniversary of a truly iconic monster of a sedan. The Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 EVO II has quite the name and is perhaps the most notable and extreme sports sedan of the early '90s. Found over at Carscoops, this ultra sedan deserves a special look to commemorate its 30 years of performance excellence.

Road-Legal DTM

This road-going Mercedes was essentially a DTM race car in street clothes. Unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show in 1990, it features a large rear wing designed to increase downforce over the rear wheels, wide-body treatment, and a large front spoiler to keep everything planted.

A Legendary Mercedes

Sporting a substantial width for a car of its time, the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II has a powerful stance and looks outright fast. The oversized rear wing is on full display as well as some iconic badging indicating this sedan is very special indeed.

Neatly wrapped leather bucket seats are center stage here. They are bolstered and supportive to keep you from sliding side to side while flogging this leviathan out on the track. A five-speed shifter nestled between the seats sits poised, waiting for action.

Iconic Power

Sourced straight from a DTM race car, the iconic 2.5-liter engine is proudly displayed. It features an inline-four developing an impressive 232 horsepower. of racing rage This was the last inline-four Mercedes would develop for DTM before AMG would take over.

Racing Pedigree

As impressive as the road-going version was, let's not forget it was purpose-built to win races. Two months after its debut, Mercedes secured its first victory with Kurt Thiim behind the wheel. In 1991, Klaus Ludwig became the runner up and by the 1992 Championship, Mercedes had won 16 of the 24 races.
