A very different Merc badge on the back

It is very unusual to see the Maybach name, usually preserved for the trunk lid of limousines of luxury cabriolets, on an SUV tailgate. But Mercedes believes that it has a new customer, who wishes to travel beyond its conventional limousine road-going ability. To cater to this discerning customer, who might live in a country with challenging road infrastructure, or simply wish to get to a venue which is secluded and cannot be reached by tarred road, is the new Maybach SUV.

A new Merc customer awaits

Mercedes-Benz has revived one of its most famous brand names, in SUV guise. The Maybach name has always been synonymous with Stuttgart luxury and limousine motoring. However, it has never truly been a gravel travel type of vehicle, for Mercedes. That all changes now, with this new Mercedes product, which attempts to combine the best of luxury and go-anywhere ability. Bringing the Maybach name into an entirely new market.

Maybach touches to the GLS face

Dedicated Mercedes SUV fans will immediately recognize the overall shape and dimensions of this new Maybach ute to the GLS. The platform and most of the mechanical bits are carried-over from Mercedes-Benz’s largest luxury SUV with some styling and design changes to turn it into a Maybach. Most noticeable is the regal grille, which has the same pinstripe chrome finish seen on the most exclusive of S-Class models. The lower valance also features a new chrome surround.

Two colors in one

One of the ways that Mercedes has managed to make the GLS a more luxurious and rare Maybach is the dual-tone paint finish. It perfectly contrasts with the lashings of chrome, which extend to the B-pillars and around the rear of this SUV. Even the exhaust tips are unique with a horizontal split through the pipes.

The ever present boosted V8

Mercedes will only be offering a single engine option with its GLS Maybach. The brand’s excellent 4-liter bi-turbo V8 has the responsibility of playing the sole powerplant to the top shelf SUV. However, it is configured to produce a healthy 550hp and 538 lb-ft of torque with a 0-60mph of 4.8 seconds. Interestingly, U.S. models will be delivered with a top speed limited to 130mph while the European GLS600 Maybach will run to 155mph.

Big wheels and boutique bags

Two stellar details concerning the Maybach GLS are its wheels and luggage options. Customers can choose to have their Maybach SUV roll on huge 23-inch alloy rims, with a unique multi-spoke design. These hefty wheels won’t depreciate ride quality one bit as the Maybach SUV is equipped with a proven air-suspension system. Recognizing that its Maybach SUV customers will use these vehicles for traveling to weekend destinations, Mercedes also offers a brand matching luggage set, to ensure that you never break theme while adventuring.

A true limousine SUV cabin

You would expect nothing less from a Maybach cabin than sumptuous luxury, and this GLS600 version does not disappoint. It features the very best leatherwork Mercedes produces and a broad option of colors. Digitization is comprehensive, with seamless syncing of Smartphones and other devices. But the really interesting bit is that this GLS Maybach, differs from other GLS modes, in that is it not a three-row vehicle. Mercedes decided to delete the rearmost row of seats, opting to create more space for second-row occupants, to slide back and enjoy a true cradling seat experience, similar to business class aviation travel. But what else would you expect, from a Maybach SUV?
