Minimalist Cabin

Just after teasing the public with some extraordinary photos of the EQ Concept, Mercedes decided to showcase the vehicle's interior fully. The EQ is believed to be an electric version of the upcoming S-Class. It's four-door design and minimalist cabin takes away all the traditional controls and adds a touch of the future.

Spacious

The EQ has a floating console at the center that bisects the interior into two. The four seats are separately placed with tons of legroom and headroom. The sloping roofline complements the conspicuous dual-pane sunroof. A lack of any B-pillars hints that the car might come with suicide doors.

Freedom to Drive

The photos reveal that the EQ will still have a steering wheel, an indication that Mercedes might still want its buyers to have control of their vehicle once in a while. It is expected, of course, that the EQ will be a highly advanced autonomous car. The ability to drive is assisted by a display that replaces the traditional rearview mirror.

Giant Touchscreen

The giant touchscreen that makes the largest part of the center console is without a doubt the highlight of the EQ's interior. Spy shots of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class reveal that it will also have a large display. This might be an indication that the EQ is indeed the electric version of the S-Class.

S-Class Traits

The name EQS remains unofficial, but recent spy shots of the upcoming S-Class reveal proportions that match up well with those of the EQ. The swoopy design is what sells it. The concept also has a pop-up door handle that is hidden, just like in the S-Class. The EQ could be more than just an electric car.

Power

Despite the similarities, the EQ will not be an S-Class on batteries. Rumor has it that it will ride on an aluminum-intensive platform, also known as Modular Electric Architecture (MEA). It will feature two motors with one at the front and the other at the rear. This will give it an all-wheel-drive system ala the dual-motor Tesla models. The two motors are expected to deliver up to 402 horsepower and 564 pound-feet of torque.

Release Date

The S-Class will be out before the end of 2020. So, this possible electric counterpart will arrive way later in the near future. Mercedes also plans to build an electric variant of the C-Class as part of its transition into alternative fuel sourced vehicles.
