No More Burnouts

The AMG C63 has for a long time been hailed for its performance. For its next generation, Mercedes plans to do away with its rear-wheel drive, replacing it with an all-wheel drive layout. This will help eliminate the unnecessary burnouts that the model has experienced in its lifetime.

It's the Customer's Fault

According to AMG's CEO and Chairman, Tobias Moers, the change is inevitable. This is what the customers want. Rear-wheel drive models are no longer a preference for them, which makes the investment not worth it for AMG. All-wheel-driven cars have been the customer's primary choice for a while now. For example, when the AMG E-Class debuted, over 90% of buyers went for the 4-wheel drive option over the standard rear-wheel variant. It only makes sense to do away with the RWDs.

With Drift Mode

Rumor has it that the C-Class AWD system will also sport a drift mode that disengages the front driveshaft. This will provide some rear-biased fun. Considering that AMG did the same thing with the E63, it's no surprise that the company still wants to retain the feature. Shifting to drift mode sends all the power to the rear wheels, allowing drivers to do remarkable things on the track and city streets. You get the utility and traction of an all-wheel-drive system with the ability to switch things up for some rear-motivated fun.

Does the Engine Change?

The unnamed source to whom TopGear spoke didn't mention any engine changes. Buyers will likely get AWD running on the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, but perhaps with a more aggressive tune. We could also see a hybrid version appear around the same time with more power.

Only a Few Left

The AMG C63 is not the only model undergoing this transition. Mercedes plans to do away with several other rear-wheel-drive models as consumers continually demand for all-wheel-drives as they move towards a complete refresh of the lineup.
