The future of Mercedes luxury sedan motoring

The new E-Class will be Mercedes-Benz’s most advanced yet heralding in a new dawn for the German luxury car brand. Engineers have worked tirelessly to integrate the best electronics with new E-Class, whilst retaining the classic luxury ride quality and pampering cabin ambiance.

A similar look - with a lot more tech

Mercedes-Benz has teased its new E-Class with some thinly-disguised pre-production images. Although the overall shape and proportions remain unchanged, you can expect a new front fascia, grille and bumper design, similar to what was added to most of its siblings in 2019. The really significant changes apply to what cannot be seen: the car’s electronics architecture.

Reading the road - for you

Mercedes has leaked some technical information on the new E-Class. Autonomous driving technology will be a big theme in the new car. An array of sensors and powerful computing ability will help guide the driver and assist in avoiding collisions. Expect more steering input and braking intervention than before, but in a way that supports, instead of unnerves, the driver. This will be the smartest E-Class yet.

Many plug-in hybrid options

This image is very telling, as it shows that the new E-Class will be offering a broad spectrum of hybridization. Expect many mild-hybrids, with integrated start motor/generators. Mercedes says that there will be a total of seven hybrid E-Class powertrain options, which should provide much lower fuel consumption, without any sacrifice in performance. In fact, the hybrid vehicles should actually be more potent in terms of acceleration, than a pure gasoline engine.

Powerful new engine choices

Some of the new engine options which Mercedes has confirmed for E-Class are a potent 2-liter four-cylinder and 3-liter in-line six. Both of these engines are turbocharged and feature mild hybridization. The boost impressive power outputs too, with the four-cylinder good for 268hp and the six-cylinder engine cranking out 362hp. For fans of the E-Class heritage, the presence of a potent in-line six-cylinder engine will be historically significant. For decades, the smoothness of in-line sixes defined the E-Class driving experience.

Smooth on the straights and balanced through the corners

Taut handling and plush ride quality has always been inherent to all E-Class models. And for the new E-Class, Mercedes-Benz has advanced its air-suspension system to provide superior roll-mitigation in corners. That cornering stability does not come at a cost to ride comfort, with the air-bellows capable of absorbing road imperfections and rendering that true magic-carpet ride quality for passengers. Sophisticated damping and body control are part of the deep engineering values applied to the development of new E-Class.

Smarter to drive - potentially cheaper to own

The new E-Class has a great diversity of dynamic safety systems. It will feature the latest version of Mercedes-Benz’s active cruise control. This latest iteration will take full control of the E-Class in heavily congested stop-start traffic. That means you become a passenger in crawl-speed traffic, even if you are seated at the helm. And can practice mindfulness in traffic, composing your thoughts, instead f having to manage the marginal throttle and brake pedal inputs. A benefit of these advanced autonomous driving features is that they could possibly reduce insurance premiums on the E-Class.
