The 2021 AMG E53 Sedan Steps Out in Style
AMG gives the E53 a nice new suit and some upgraded tech.
New taillights and much more
The AMG E53 nomenclature gets that little bit more interesting for 2020. Mercedes-Benz has announced some new upgrades for its mid-sized AMG sedan platform and in the minds of many enthusiasts, this is possibly the best-balanced of all four-door AMGs.
The front view is all-new
Mercedes-Benz's characteristic Panamericana grille takes pride of place on the new E53's nose. With its defined slats and bold chrome detailing, it gives the four-door performance car a lot of road presence. Framing the new grille are slimmer headlights, which feature full-time LED illumination.

They've made it better inside - too
The E53's helm now has a split-spoke design and the 12.3-inch digital instrumentation cluster can be configured to relay a host of technical readouts. You can track lap times, G-force readings and even trace how much power and torque are being used at a specific moment. MBUX infotainment plays nice with your Smartphone and most touch surfaces are either leather or carbon-fiber.

An in-line six with intensity
If you respect the Mercedes-Benz E-Class heritage of in-line six-cylinder engines, you'll certainly approve of the E53's powerplant. It is the latest evolution of AMG's 3-liter turbocharged straight-six, boosting 429hp of power and 384 lb-ft of torque. Those outputs are delivered to all four wheels, via the 4Matic+ drivetrain. With a nine-speed automatic transmission doing the shifting, the 2021 model year E53 AMG should be good for 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds.

It rides on air - literally
Balanced performance is a theme with the E53 AMG. As such it rides on an air-suspension system, with three settings: comfort, sport and sport plus. They each correspond to an increase in compression and rebound speed. That means that although the E53 AMG is a large luxury car with potent performance, it never overwhelms the driver with unruly mid-corner misbehavior.

It is safer than ever before
Those large brakes are what the multitude of safety systems rely on, to execute the response triggering, enabled by an array of clever sensors and systems. The E53 AMG now has adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go ability, active steering input assist, autonomous emergency braking, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system.

Four- or five-doors, as you wish
As with most previous E-Class AMGs, the 2021 model year E53 has both the sedan and station wagon configuration. For those who prefer the secure locking space of a metal trunk, you can opt for the E53 sedan. If you need more load space or simply prefer the most understated presence of the station wagon proportions, there is an E53 estate derivative too. The weight and performance difference between the E53 sedan and station wagon models is negligible.
