A modern approach to living out of a van

Behold, the 2020 Metris Weekender in all its glory. For those unfamiliar, the Metris is a luxury passenger van that is employed by a lot of small businesses, whether it’s for package deliveries or passenger transport duties. What Mercedes has done here is it removed the seat benches and instead outfitted the van with all the necessary features to making living there a more comfortable experience.

What sort of living features are included in the Weekender?

Well, for one, it can raise its roof to create near-instantaneous expanded living quarters that allow up to two people to sleep near its ceiling. Mercedes has also fit in a folding rear bench that can sleep two. That means you can house up to four people overnight in this model. The Weekender also features two swiveling front seats that can turn around to face the rear of the van, should there be guests over.

Enjoy all the comforts of home whilst on the road

One of the major benefits of the Weekender is the fact that it was designed by Mercedes. That means the company has gone the extra step to include features that make an experience within the van a bit more special. Some of the additional items that are included in the Weekender are an eight-foot awning as well as bug screens for the van's hatch and sliding doors. There’s also a tent that attaches to the rear hatch, and even a pullout kitchen. Roof racks, integrated solar panels, and an in-dash navigation system are also included with the Weekender.

What sort of power are we looking at with this tent-on-wheels?

Mercedes didn’t do much to change the Weekender from the Metris when it comes to what’s driving it. That said, included with the Weekender is a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline-fueled inline-four engine that can turn out 208 horsepower and is controlled via a seven-speed automatic transmission. When it’s all put together, this camper can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

How much does Mercedes’ Weekender cost?

Unfortunately, no one knows yet. Pricing has been kept under wraps pretty well, but some industry experts have projected a price tag for the new glamping van. First, you take the cost for the Metris, which is $40,000. Then, you take the cost of what it would be to convert the van to a camper, which is around $25,000. Throw in some of the additional Mercedes luxury features and you can safely assume that the Weekender will fall in around the $70,000 range. If that’s within your budget, do try and scoop one up early: Mercedes said that the first 100 Weekender customers will receive a free National Parks Pass with their van.
