Step inside the future of S-Class

This is Mercedes-Benz's vision of where its S-Class will trends towards in the coming future. The brand's esteemed limousine range has always embraced technology and this concept vehicle, codenamed Vision EQS showcases an array of new design elements and principles. This all-encompassing forward-thinking design will guide the future of Mercedes-Benz large vehicle planning.

Lighting up the future

Advanced lighting technology is an anchor feature of this EQS concept car. Engineers anticipate that lighting technology will be one of the signaling methods to allow better self-driving vehicles, making it possible for cars to signal their intention to other vehicles. As such, Mercedes-Benz has gone LED overload with the Vision EQS to allow for easier communication of the vehicle's intentions.

A grille not for cooling

To illustrate the intricacy of this new lighting tech, Mercedes-Benz engineers have managed to place no less than 940 individual LEDs in the EQS grille. Powering this complicated light system are 188 circuit boards. It is this combination of powerful lighting and its complexity, which could give a future S-Class the ability to project various light signal patterns onto the road, or at other vehicles.

A lot of three-pointed stars around the back

Around the rear, EQS has a very fluid shape. There is a trunk shut line, but no obvious rear light clusters. What Mercedes-Benz designers have done, is to install 229 individual LEDs, at the rear, And they are all shaped like the brand's iconic three-pointed star. It is great detailing, both functional and relevant.

Wide aspect cabin with luxury trim

Luxury and space are a given with any S-Class model and this Vision EQS has an amazing cabin architecture. Those seats are all ergonomically designed to offer business-class levels of comfort and features. The cabin is also not split by a traditional center-pillar, due to the front- and rear-hinged door design. This allows for tremendous ease of ingress and egress for passengers. It also gives the Vision EQS a huge field of view, through its glasshouse, unconstrained by a normal b-pillar position.

Screens, screens and more screens

The front panel and driver interface design is deeply futuristic. Note that rectangular-rim steering wheel and the complete absence of traditional dials and buttons. Haptic digital touch surfaces and voice prompting have replaced physical controls in the Vision EQS. It also houses a huge center console screen for main infotainment control and feature functionality. Individual controls are door-mounted tablets on the armrests at each front seat.

Powerful presence and performance

Beyond the electrifying looks, the Vision EQS also has an electric performance - both literally and figuratively. It is powered by a larger battery pack, which feeds energy to electric motors, places on each axle. The total system output for this all-wheel-drive electric system is a very adequate 469hp and Mercedes-Benz claims that the Vision EQS concept car will be good for 435 miles of range, on a single charge. As a future S-Class, this concept car is a very appealing vision of where Mercedes-Benz is placing its design and engineering resources.
