Eight is great!

To be more precise, the eight we're speaking of is the number of cylinders the GLS 580 features under its hood. Yes, sir, we are looking at a genuine twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 makes that can go from nil to 60mph in just 4.7-seconds. That time is most certainly impressive for an SUV of this heft and proportions. Net power is listed as 483 hp and the car can generate some 516lb-ft of torque. Just as important, though – the V-8 feels right in this car when it comes to sound, power, and performance.

Fuel efficiency – we don’t need no stinking fuel efficiency

Now for the flip side of that aforementioned super powerful boosted engine. Unfortunately, this SUV has some pretty low numbers when it comes to fuel efficiency but after all, it's an SUV. It gets only 16 miles per gallon in city driving and 21 miles per gallon on the highway. But, if we’re looking for the bright side of things, these numbers are actually on par or slightly better than competitors such as the BMW X7 xDrive50i (15 city / 21 highway) and the Chevy Suburban (15 city / 22 highway).

A balanced, comfortable ride

While the GLS580 can capably seat 7 passengers, it never feels cramped. And even though it tips the scale at just under 6000 pounds, it never feels like a super heavy SUV. That’s because everything is supported by the much-celebrated AIRMATIC® suspension system. This modern-day solution employs electronically controlled air springs which, in turn, provide an ideal balance of riding comfort and handling composure. What’s more, the car’s automatic 4-wheel level control helps to support additional cargo/passengers and can lower at greater speeds to improve aerodynamics, stability, and overall efficiency.

It is a Mercedes-Benz vehicle – what luxury options does it have to offer?

Everything and then some. To start with the seats, every GLS580 comes with power front seats with memory, heated front seats, ventilated front seats, and multi-contour front seats with a massage option. Not bad, but also included is a 5-zone automatic climate control system, power-folding 50/50-split 3rd-row seats, household-type 115V power outlet, and more (much, much more).

What sort of price tag are we looking at?

To help avoid any outright sticker shock, the folks at Mercedes-Benz priced the GLS580 under six figures – as in, just under six figures. The base model starts at $97,800. If you want any sort of option, though, you’ll easily pass the $100K mark, with some options taking the SUV as high (and higher than) $130K.
