This article applies to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG (2002-2009).

One doesn't need to be a professional technician to understand that your AMG Mercedes-Benz needs fuel to run. But the fuel system is quite extensive and it isn't as simple as just filling the tank with gas. The fuel is stored in the gas tank, then the fuel pump sends the gas through the filter and through the fuel lines underneath the car to the engine. The fuel is then pressurized and sprayed into the cylinder for internal combustion to happen. So as you can tell, without a properly working fuel pump, you won't be getting very far. Here is our step-by-step guide on how to replace the fuel pump in the Mercedes-Benz.

Materials Needed

  • Needle nosed pliers
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Ratchet wrench
  • 13/32" socket
  • Shop rag

Warning

Accessing the fuel pump will expose you to gas fumes and possibly fuel leaks. It is imperative that you aren't near any static electricity, smoke, or fire. Make sure to work in a well-ventilated area and have access to a fire extinguisher.

Step 1 – Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the battery before commencing any work. Start by disconnecting the negative (black) terminal, then the positive (red) terminal.

Step 2 – Prep access

To access the Mercedes-Benz AMG's fuel pump, you must first make your way into it. Start by accessing the rear door, and lifting up the bottom of the passenger seat. The seat will snap at the front edge and will pop out with force. Once the seat is out, remove the protective liner and metal lid on top of the fuel pump assembly. This will expose six 13/32" bolts; use your ratchet and socket to remove those.

Step 3 – Remove pump

There are a few details you must know before removing the fuel pump. These are the components that make up the fuel pump assembly:

  • Fuel line: rubber black hose
  • Wiring connector: white plastic wiring harness
  • Holding Brackets: two metal rods that hold fuel pump in place

Use the needle nosed pliers to unclip the wiring harness, then you can use the flat head screwdriver to unlock the fuel line and slide it off the pump. Lastly, use your fingers to snap off the holding brackets, then you can slide the fuel pump out of its housing. Remember that at this point some fuel may leak out, so be prepared with shop rag or a small bowl.

Step 4 – Install new pump

With the old and faulty pump out of the way, you can work in reverse order to install the new pump. Follow these steps to make sure nothing is overlooked.

  • Attach clamps.
  • Connect fuel lines.
  • Connect wiring harness.
  • Replace six bolts back on.
  • Replace metal lid.
  • Replace protective liner.
  • Reattach back seat.
  • Connect battery.
