This article applies to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2002-2009).

You don't need to be a mechanic or technician to understand that your Mercedes Benz needs fuel in order for the engine to run, but what exactly happens after you fill up at the gas station? The fuel injection system is quite big and elaborate, it all starts with the gas tank, the fuel pump, the fuel filter, fuel lines, and then it heads into the engine blog and cylinders where fuel gets ignited. Therefore, a faulty fuel pump would obstruct all of that from happening. We've compiled a step by step guide on how to replace the fuel pump.

Materials Needed

  • Needle nosed pliers
  • Flat head screw driver
  • Ratchet Wrench
  • 13/32" socket

Warning

Accessing the fuel pump are will expose you to fuel fumes and possibly fuel leaks. It is imperative that there are no sources of static electricity, smoke, and much less, fire. Make sure you are on a well-ventilated area and have access to a fire extinguisher.

Step 1 - Disconnect battery

Disconnect battery before commencing any work. Start by disconnecting the negative (black) terminal first, then the positive (red) second.

Step 2 - Prep fuel pump

In order to remove the fuel pump, you must first perform these steps. Access the rear passenger seat and lift up the bottom part of the seat, the seats will swing toward the driver's seat backrest. Then remove the protective liner and use the pliers to pop the metal lid above the fuel pump. Then use the ratchet and socket to undo the six bolts that keep the fuel pump sealed.

Step 3 - Remove fuel pump

Now that you can access the fuel pump, there are a few things to know before you can retrieve the pump itself. The fuel pump has the following components attached to it:

  • Fuel line - black rubber hose
  • Wiring harness - white plastic plug with red and black wires on it
  • Holding brackets - one on the right and one on the left of the pump, these are what holds the pump in place

First use the pliers to push on the side clips of the wiring harness to remove it, then use the flathead screwdriver to push on the green pin on the fuel line connector to slide it off. Then use your fingers to twist the holding brackets until the unsnap the fuel pump. Then you can slide the fuel pump out. Be careful, as it may drip some fuel.

  • Attach clamps
  • Connect fuel line
  • Connect wiring harness
  • Replace six bolts back on
  • Replace metal lid
  • Replace protective liner
  • Reattach back seat
