This article applies to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and E-Class AMG (2002-2009).

When a power window isn't working, it can be a serious problem. Nobody wants to drive home in bad weather with the windows down. But don't fret too much. There are only a few things that can cause this sort of problem in any car. Here, you'll read about some of the most common solutions. One of these fixes is certain to work for the window issues in your E-Class.

Materials Needed

  • Pry tool
  • Multi-meter (optional)
  • Torx and flat head screwdriver (optional)

Step 1 – Synchronize the windows

If your windows work, but they keep going to the wrong position, it's probably because the sensor for the windows needs to be re-centered. This happens sometimes when you remove the battery.

  • Close all the doors in the vehicle, including the trunk, then put the key in the ignition.
  • Pull on a single window switch until the window is completely closed and hold that switch for approximately one second.
  • You should hear a click confirming that the sensor has detected the end of the rail. Repeat this for the other three windows.

If you're unable to move any windows at all, go to Step 2. If you're having problems with only an individual window, go to Step 3.

Step 2 – Check the fuse

If it's clear that none of your windows are working, then it could be a blown fuse.

  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Remove the panel at the side of the dashboard to access the fuse box.
  • Find the fuse for the power windows and check it with a multimeter.
  • If there's no continuity then the fuse needs to be replaced.

Step 3 – Replace the window switch

If you can't control the window at all, then it could be that the window switch is defective.

  • Unscrew the bolts holding the door panel with a Torx and flat head screwdriver.
  • Use a pry tool to pry the door panel loose.
  • Unplug the electrical connections in the door.
  • Pull the window switch out from under the door panel.
  • Install a new window switch then return the door panel.

Warning

As you're removing the door panel, be especially careful with the wide wire connecting to the side airbag. You don't want to accidentally alter it.

Step 4 – Replace the power window regulator and motor

If the window slides all the way down and you know for certain that it's not the window switch, then it means that the device responsible for moving the window up and down is malfunctioning. This is not an easy task so you may want to consider giving it to a professional shop.

  • Remove the door panel (see Step 3).
  • Remove the black control module and the speakers from the door.
  • Unplug and remove the motor held by Torx screws.
  • Carefully drill out the rivets around the regulator.
  • Remove the two brackets at the bottom and top of the regulator.
  • Pull out the regulator.
  • Install the new regulator and replace the brackets and rivets.
  • Reinstall the motor, control module, and speakers.
  • Return the door panel.
