*** VR530 for AMG 63s ***

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Many of you have followed our development of power parts for M156 engine in the past several months.

https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/202131-amg-63-r-d-1-a.html

Here are the first fruits of our effort.

VR530 Power Package:

Although AMG rates M156 from 475HP in CLK63 to 518HP in S63, in reality this engine is right around 505HP, as all cars make close to 420 HP at the wheels - (420/0.83 = 506HP).

VR530, as the name implies, brings 63s to 530HP/485TQ.

To assist us in testing the components we were graciously lended a beatiful, white CLS63 by local MBworld member - John.

First we established a baseline. CLS had Powerchip software and charcoal filters were removed. Powerchip flashed the car back to stock and we reinstalled stock filters.

1. Underdrive Pulleys.
As many of you know I am a big fan of underdrive pulleys (UD). I have made them for many cars from Fords to BMWs and of course MB. Typically, by reducing alternator, water pump and power stering pulleys weight and increasing their size, I have seen 5-12HP gains. Typically in first three gears as rotational inertia and gear multiplication have bigger effect on power reaching the ground. In all honesty we are not really adding power to the engine, we enabling more horses reach the ground.

On M156 power steering pulley is made out of plastic and is very close to power steering fluid reservoir. No gains to be had. Alternator and water pump, on other hand, are heavy, cast iron pieces with room to play. Using T6061 billet aluminum and increasing pulleys sizes by roughly 10% we cut stock pulleys weight by half.

UD pulleys were the first to be installed and dynoed. I was not expecting much gains, but I was pleasantly surprised. Although there was only a small 3HP peak gain, HP under the curve has come up, which helps acceleration.

2. HiFlow Air Filters.

Since it is very easy to swap out filters on 63s, we went ahead and installed our new HiFlow Air Filters and removed stock charcoal filters. The gains were impressive as 63 was being suffocated by the stock filters combination.

3. Phenolic Heat Spacers.
The biggest enemy of power is heat. As incoming air rises in temperature, it's density decreases and less power is produced as the result. Stock intake manifold is made out of magnesium and becomes a heat sink after just 10 minutes of driving. In my datalogging I have seen as much as 70F rise in Air Intake Temperature (IAT) above ambient (160F on 90F day). Under normal street driving IAT never gets closer than 25F to ambient air. After becoming heat soaked car noticeably lays down on power as timing gets retarded.

To help alleviate this problem, I have produced a set of phenolic spacers that insulate intake manifold from the cylinder heads and prevent heat transfer from the heads. As the result there is 15-25F reduction in IAT and a significantly more consistent car.

Phenolic Heat Spacers (PHC) come with two sets of intake gaskets and new manifold bolts.

4. IAT Sensor Relocation Harness.
Now, the next obvious question is - why not simply relocate IAT sensor up front where it can always recieve cool ambient air. Stock IAT sensor is mounted in inlet splitter elbow by the firewall. Without truly reducing IAT, relocating the sensor will result in false data going to DME and thus possibility of triggering knock sensors as more aggressive timing tables will be used with warm air.

Now, however, since we did lower IATs with Phenolic Heat Spacers, true IAT will be a lot closer to ambient. To relocate IAT sensor upfront we simply left original sensor in it's place, spliced an extension harness with water proof connectors and added another IAT sensor now mounted up front by the driver side foglamp.

On the dyno, 63 loved it. IAT was the same as ambient and added 3 degrees of timing pushed total gains to 24HP.

VR530

1. Underdrive Pulleys Kit - $239
2. HiFLow Air Filters - $179
3. Phenolic Heat Spacers - $289
4. Intake Air Temperature Sensor with relocating harness - $129

Total - $836, Package Savings of $87

$749

$999 Installed.

Thank you for listening.

Well done, Vadim !!! With these simple bolt on parts the 63 motor is at 530hp. Add some good aftermarket tuning and you're looking at 560hp, easy.

Hi! Vadim
Great job. Now I need to get these parts for my car.
I already have air filters. How much for rest of parts?(do you have package deals?) How long will it take to install them? Are these parts will void factory warranty? Thanks for making parts for 63 engine

Great results Vadim........

Do you think there is any power to be had from larger air boxes and headers?

He said "as all cars make close to 420 HP at the wheels - (420/0.83 = 506HP)." In other words ~420 at the wheels considering drivetrain loss, or, 506hp at the crank.

I'm wrong...

I was thinking 506 X .83 = 419.98HP

He has / by...

Sorry for the confusion.

I'm sure VRP would give you the $999 (installed) deal minus what you paid for their filters. That is a sweet ride. I didn't remember it with the stockers on.
The install shouldn't take long at all, based on the list of stuff. I'd assume 2 - 3 hours, but dunno.

Warranty is a trickier topic than that. Keep in mind that each component on the car has a specification that it must meet. In this case, your pulleys will not weigh as much as they are spec'd to (which is actually the object of the mod). So, if an out of spec component (some mods) is SHOWN to have attributed to the demise of any component on your car, then that component will no longer have a warranty.

As always, I'd have a good relationship with my dealer or go to a mod friendly dealership. SoCal is pretty mod friendly in general.

I wonder how much height there is between the OEM boxes and the hood? that is what is a pain on the 55s.

Did Rick notice any gains with his RT Headers? i'd assume similar, if they are shorties.

This is an aspect of modding that can not be overlooked. My tuner shop that did my work did most of the job by establishing a good reputation and creating a positive pipeline with a couple of service advisors @ MB, especially with one in particular.

As a matter of fact, I'm going to see my SA tomorrow to drop off some nice premium cigars to show my appreciation for my recent warranty repairs to my car. He takes care of me so showing that I'm not a total dick can only help in any future repairs that may fall into the gray area of warranty coverage.

It's no guarantee but it won't hurt me trying to grease the wheel a bit...

Rick definately noticed gains and he showed it on the track..... His time was 0.25 seconds lower than the stock CLS63 and almost 4 mph higher trap speed. But that was also his first time out. I think after a couple of more practices, he'll show more than that

Anyone that has already purchased 1 or more of the components that make up this package will be able to purchase the remaining pieces at the same discounted price.

Anyone wishing to purchase this package can paypal the funds to sales@vrptuning.com.

If you wish to schedule an appointment to have the parts installed, either email myself (victor@vrptuning.com) or Vadim (vadim@vrptuning.com) and we'll get you booked in..

Now that we have all the small stuff out of the way, the more interesting 63 stuff will be coming..

Thanks everyone!

Sounds Great!
Going under the knife during the transformation will be uncomfortable for my SL55 at first. She will need support from the SL65 Monster to ensure all is well.
It takes an SL Monster to know Another....
