Move Over Law
I've never heard of this before and thought maybe someone else might
appreciate a heads-up too.
In California, the "Move-over" law became operative on January 1, 2010.

Important Law to Share: I wanted to let my Medlock Bridge
neighbors know about the CA move over law. My son got a ticket on
Pleasant Hill coming back from Wal-Mart. A Duluth police car
(turned out it was 2 police cars) was on the side of the road
giving a ticket to someone else. My son slowed down to pass but
did not move into the other lane. The second police car
immediately pulled him over and gave him a ticket. My son and I
had never heard of the law. It is a fairly new law that states if
any emergency vehicle is on the side of the road, if you are able,
you are to move into the far lane. The cost of the ticket was
$754, with 3 points on your license and a mandatory court appearance.
Please let everyone you know that drives about this new law.
It is true (see details at the following web address). It states
that except two states, all the other US states (even Canada )
enacted similar kind of law.

It's been law in NC since 2002... It definitely makes sense for this law to exist (but I wish it didn't have to!!!). Here in the Raleigh area I have never seen or heard of anyone getting pulled over for it but I am sure people do (and should). Police officers are risking their lives with each and every traffic stop they make so let's give them a little respect and either move to a further lane away from them (if possible and safe) or slow down!!!

Move Over & Slow Down
Quoted from California Driver's Handbook posted on the CA DMV Website:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/hdbk/shr_ped_work.htm
"Move Over & Slow Down
Drivers are required to move over and slow down when approaching a roadside emergency along a state highway or freeway. The law is designed to reduce the deaths of police officers, tow truck drivers, paramedics, and other emergency personnel who are aiding stranded or injured motorists. Use caution if lane changes are required."

LOL, this is the "Don't squish the piggy" law. CA sucks, sorry guys, but you live in a communist state run by anti gun maniacs who elected the man with the highest kill count in Hollywood.

WoW didnt know this law at all...... I only slow down when I see a cop giving ticket to someone else but not changing lane. I would understand if emergency, towing a car, changing tire or siren cars. But never thought about changing lane for a cop who is giving ticket to someone...

Section 21809 is added to the Vehicle Code, to read:
21809. (a) (2) This bill, until January 1, 2010, would require a person
driving a vehicle on a freeway approaching a stationary authorized
emergency vehicle that is displaying emergency lights, or a
stationary tow truck that is displaying flashing amber warning
lights, to approach with due caution and, before passing in a lane
immediately adjacent to the authorized emergency vehicle or tow
truck, absent any other direction by a peace officer, proceed to
either make a lane change into an available lane, as specified, or,
if that maneuver would be unsafe or impracticable, slow to a
reasonable and prudent speed that is safe.

Also not certain on the fines/points you say your son recieved? The actual text states
(b) A violation of subdivision (a) is an infraction, punishable by
a fine of not more than fifty dollars ($50).

I wish slow vehicle would "move over" to the right when they see a car coming fast behind them. Heck no! they slow down and watch you in there rear view mirror I move over if I see a fast car coming behind me.
