Reprogram your keyless remote for easy access to your Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

This article applies to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2002-2009).

A keyless remote offers great convenience. Not only can you use the remote to control access to your vehicle, but you can load and unload the contents of your vehicle without needing to stop and fumble with a traditional key, which can be a hassle when holding large items, such as a car seat, bags of groceries or sports equipment. With a keyless remote all you have to do is point and click, and voila – you have immediate access to your vehicle. If your keyless remote stops working, the issue could be one of two things: a faulty battery or bad programming. Either way, you can fix a faulty keyless remote in a matter of minutes.

Materials Needed

  • Replacement batteries
  • Flatbed screwdriver

Step 1 – Check the batteries in keyless remote

If your keyless remote stops working, the culprit could be defective batteries. To replace the defective batteries, pop off the back cover of your keyless remote using a flatbed screwdriver. Remove the defective batteries by hand, and then replace them with a new set of batteries.

Pro Tip

The red light on your keyless remote will always flash when the batteries inside are working properly.

Step 2 – Engage the power in your vehicle

Point your keyless remote toward the driver side door. Press the "unlock" button on the front of your keyless remote. As long as you are within arm's length of the driver side door, the sensor located behind the door handle should detect the radio frequency emitted by the keyless remote.

Step 3 – Insert the key manually

Insert your key into the driver side lock. Lock and unlock your vehicle while continuing to hold the remote button. Start again if you let go of the remote button. Wait several minutes before starting again.

Pro Tip

You'll need to click open the keyless remote housing by hand and remove the key from inside.

Step 4 – Finish programming keyless remote

Release your finger from the remote "unlock" button. Wait 5 to 10 minutes for the programming progress to complete. Test your remote. If the keyless remote still does not work, repeat the above-outlined steps.

Pro Tip

Remember, even new keyless remotes sometimes require new batteries.
