In the olden days of automotive lore, swapping out a steering wheel was simple. All you needed was a couple of tools and a strong pair of hands to yank the old one out. These days, cars are filled with countless sensors as well as electronic tidbits, and the steering wheel is no exception. Not to mention that pesky (but helpful in event of emergency) airbag. Swapping out a modern steering wheel is still an easy task, but just a bit more expensive than it used to be. Here's how to get it done the right way.

Materials Needed

  • T25 Torx key
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • M10 Allen key or socket wrench
  • Breaker bar or pipe (optional)

Step 1 – Remove airbag

First, disconnect the negative (black) terminal of your battery and set it aside. Use a T25 Torx key to loosen the two screws on the back of the original steering wheel. Once the screws are completely loose, the airbag will come right out. Disconnect the four plugs connected to it with a small flat head screwdrivers or your fingers (if they're tiny).

Step 2 – Remove steering wheel

Use a M10 Allen key or socket wrench to loosen the steering wheel bolt. This bolt is typically in very tight, and you may need to use a breaker bar or pipe to gain the leverage necessary to break it free. Once the bolt is free, pull the old steering wheel off and set it aside.

Step 3 – Install new steering wheel

Place the new steering wheel on the steering column, making sure to line up the markings so the wheel is straight. Use the M10 Allen key or socket wrench to re-install the steering wheel bolt. Plug the wiring back into the airbag, and pop it into place by pressing inward on the steering wheel. Re-install the two screws on the back. Reconnect the battery, and test to make sure everything works.
